This is a very nice, pretty somewhat scenic course even if it is an out and back route. The race is fairly well organized with a few hiccups like the line to get your shirt and bag on Saturday before noon was extremely long.

We got dropped off at the start and picked up afterwards which made it easier to navigate.

Overall if Maine is on your states to run a marathon I highly recommend this one. A few items:
– They had white tech shirts with a nice design, I hate white shirts because they get discolored quickly
– Awesome race hats you could buy!
– This was my 38th marathon and the first one where the official race photographers did not get a picture of me due to them moving around and running low on battery power on their cameras when I ran by. Not a big deal overall but kind of surprising considering this race has been run 27 times.

I competed in this race as part of relay team and did the biking portion. In 2016 I did the full Boulder Ironman which was held at the same place at this time of year. They switched the times for the Full Ironman and this half so that competitors could have more favorable weather conditions as it is usually pretty hot in early August (the full Ironman was held in the beginning of June). As it turned out this year it was hotter in early June than it was on August 5th when this race was held.

Overall this race was very good, very nice swim setup, good bike course however the run had some rough road/trail conditions in certain spots. The t-shirt and medal were both very good (nice light gray t-shirt that fit right and had a nice design). The only issue was logistics on race day. We drove up from south of Denver the day of the race and there was a traffic jam 2 miles from the venue that we were stuck in for over an hour even though we were very early. They delayed the start of the event due to the traffic issue. As it turned out they did not have police directing traffic off the nearby highway early enough and they only had one entrance to the Boulder Reservoir open. Once they opened up both entrances we were able to get in and get ready. There were a lot of nervous athletes who decided to hike from where they were stopped on the highway to try and get there in time. They have held this event enough times now that logistic issues like this shouldn’t happen but overall it all worked out and it was a very good race.

Each year they improve certain parts of this race but there are still some issues.
Good things
– The expo is much easier to get into and out of than in the past
– Shirts had a nice design and fit well this time
– If this was your second marathon of 2017 you got a nice Colfax Marathon duffel bag
– They have near real time runner tracking in place

Bad things
– The water station at mile 4 was not set up and nobody was there when the marathon went through
– No marker or timing mat for the 13.1 mile marker of the marathon, this is marathon running setup 101 and there is no excuse for not having something there.
– The race still starts and end at City Park, there is no parking there so unless you are getting dropped off or live nearby you have to wander around to find a spot to park. City Park is a horrible place to stage an event this large as there is little easy access for mass transit such as light rail.

Note: This course is not easy, there are a LOT of sharp turns on it and you go through some rough roads in spots. These things take a toll on your legs by the end of marathon.

I really want to like this event as it is the only marathon in Denver now but if you want to run a race in Colorado there are other events that are better.

This was the 15th year of the Little Rock Marathon and it is a very well organized race. The expo was in the lower level of the host hotel and the start and finish were blocks away. Some people thought it was hilly but it depends what your viewpoint, I thought it was a nice course with a fair amount of elevation changes.

I did not know when I signed up for this race that one of the things the Little Rock Marathon is known for is huge, outlandish finisher’s medals. I don’t run races for the finisher’s medals but have to say this one was absurdly oversized and ugly (it must weigh about 5 lbs). In addition the shirt design is ugly in my opinion, I doubt I will wear it.

I ran this race through #MarathonTours and it was a much more interesting trip and race than I originally though it would be. The marathon is two laps of the 1/2 marathon course with some nice sections along the ocean. Although it is November it was warm and humid but luckily they have many aid stations. They handed out water in bags and some sort of flavored water in various colors along with ice during the second lap. I ended up running faster than I thought I would due to the heat and humidity.

Cuba was a fascinating place to visit and I highly recommend going there to find out what it is like yourself. Run in an old pair of running shoes that way you can give them to somebody there (people ask you for them after the race and many could really use them!). I brought along extra running gear, toiletries, etc. and we gave it to people because there are many things in short supply there.
