This was my third time returning to this weekend. I did the 5 miler and the full marathon. The first half is very hilly but it has a lot of spectator support! The second half is in Water Works park and grays lake. It’s flat but not a lot of people along the route here! You get an awesome medal and a sweet jacket. Theres plenty of water stops. I honestly love this race. I’m always impressed year after year with how well it is run.

This race is great local race. It’s not expensive AT ALL. You also have the option to skip getting the race shirt which is nice because I don’t need another t shirt in my closet. This race allows dogs which is awesome because I’m always looking for races to run with my dog. There are a couple killer hills but otherwise, it’s pretty flat. Some of the race is done on a limestone trail and I got stuck in bike wheel tracks a few times. The medals are handmade which is awesome and they have plenty of local beers to choose from afterwards.

This race is good but it can be expensive. The swag you get isn’t the greatest but the race production is excellent. I ran in 2018 and 2019. I didn’t see as many bands this year as last. The shirt was kind of ugly but I loved the medal based on the same concept. It’s a good first timers half, but it can get really hot. It is July in Chicago.

I guess I’m not the biggest fan of the team element but I think if you get a really good group together it could be a lot of fun. The race starts in Jefferson and runs into downtown Des Moines. For me, it was a really stressful day of trying to get to my leg before my super speedy teammate got there. Lots of teams dress in costume and decorate their vans. I didnt see very many photographers on course and the one I did see got in our way at the handoff and my brother ran into him. I also wouldve liked a medal but we just got drinking glasses. Overall, I don’t know if I would do this race again. It was an expensive race for only getting a cup and a tshirt.

This race was so much fun!! My brother and I went down as first timers and I paced him through his first half marathon. This course is so pretty and does have some challenging hills. The expo was very small and I did not find much of anything to buy. The medal was AWESOME. Also the after party, you can have up to FOUR drinks. They have other drinks besides your basic beers too. Free on course photography too. It was a lot of fun. I will definitely be back!!

This year was HOT. 2018 was COLD. Be prepared for ANY weather!! I think they added extra water stations because it was so hot this year. A lot of people ran in costumes, but I ditched mine due to the heat. There’s almost a 2 mile walk from the staging area to the start line and it’s hard for spectators to see you. My dad came to the start line and I never saw him bc there was a whole road separating us from the spectators. He tried to come to magic Kingdom and it was PACKED. I even bought him the ChEAR Squad package and that didn’t help. I did see him in the animal kingdom parking lot though and at the finish line. It’s definitely hard for spectators to get around though. Don’t bank on seeing anyone. The swag was great. It’s a nice long sleeve shirt and mickey ears with a beautiful medal! I also bought a cute quarter zip and a tervis water bottle. It was pricy but it’s disney. Running inside the parks was magical but the rest of the miles were hard. It’s hard to run with hardly any spectators and nothing to look at but highways. All in all, it was a good race. I don’t think I’ll do the full again just due to the amount of boring miles and the bad experience with the heat but I’d definitely love to try a half at Disney!!

This race is awesome! Running in Des Moines is like running no where else. The crowds will cheer and high five and hand out snacks! The aid stations were great and the volunteers were so nice. I wish there was fruit at more stations, since I tend to get hungry easily. The hills between miles 4 and 8 are the hardest and they will eat you alive. If you get a chance to run them before the race, I highly suggest you do! Otherwise the course is pretty flat and has great views of pretty houses or greenery. Another note is that the half and the full start together and don’t separate until mile 2. So the first two miles are pretty crowded. All in all, I love this race. I did the 5k last year and also enjoyed that race too. I always PR here so that’s a plus 👍😎

This is a good tune up for any fall marathons you’ll do. Its nice that they have this. Most of the race is done on trails in the shade. When I did it in 2018, it was so hot and humid, they were advising everyone to drop down to the half. 9f course I was dumb but I met a close running friend there!
