Unfortunately, the race was cancelled about 12 hours before the race start time due to the California wildfires. While this could not be controlled or avoided, I will say that I was extremely disappointed with the communication runners received. The potential for the race to be cancelled was not mentioned at the race expo the day before and runners received only one email that described the cancellation. It seemed like the course would have made for a beautiful run.

This was my second Pittsburgh half marathon and despite some rainy conditions there was still a huge crowd over the entire course to keep you motivated. There are a ton of hills (and bridges that are huge hills) for this race, so you have to be ready for those (especially at miles 11 and 12). It is a well organized race and you get views of most of the city – absolutely love this race and will continue to do it in the years to come.

I’ve done this race 3 or 4 times now and it continues to be my favorite. Both the 10 and 5k start in one neighborhood and end in another – there are plenty of hills but that’s to be expected, and you do get some flat miles in. In true Pittsburgh race fashion, there are plenty of people along the course to cheer you on. Shuttles are offered from downtown to the start line which is nice since you end the race downtown. The 2017 race was particularly nice because you got a medal with art designed by Burton Morris (a Pittsburgh native) which is by far my favorite medal I have earned. My only complaint is that the 9am start time is late for my preference (and in 2017 with unseasonably hot weather it was a little miserable).

The Pittsburgh half has some major hills, but the energy from the crowd the ENTIRE course keeps you going. It is unreal how much energy the crowd had for the full 13.1 miles, you have to do this race once.

I ran in this race only once, but from what I heard the race course had slightly changed from previous years. The course was totally chaotic, you had to run in a circle at one point and get a wristband the first time through so they could make sure you could go on to the next part of the course. There were only one or two drink stations for the entire half marathon, only water /no gatorade. No gels, etc. were offered but frankly, I was more concerned about the lack of water stations. The course was okay, some hills – but if you’re looking for a race where people from the community cheer you on throughout the course this one isn’t it.
