This is the second time I’ve done this race, and this year was for retribution. 2022 was hot, humid, and my first (and only) DNF in a marathon. I came into this race two weeks after Boston with zero expectations about my performance, but adamant I would have a good time. And the Fling Pig did NOT disappoint. The expo was a little chaotic on Saturday, but that was to be expected. Everything was really well laid out, and the swag is great. If you run a Sunday race you get a “premium perk” which was a backpack this year. The start is easy to navigate. I dropped off gear and the process was painless. Heading into my corral was nerve-wracking. Can you ever have too many port-o-potties? (Answer: NO) This course is HARD. The hills come early and you can trash your legs if you don’t run by effort. I think the weather will always be iffy in Southern Ohio this time of year, and yeah, it rained. Buckets. Ludicrous rain. Nothing to do but swim. The crowds were still great on the entire course except a small section of interstate. They were the real heros that day.

Get to the starting line early. The starting corral and chutes to get the the corral were extremely crowded (packed) and we couldn’t get to the right corral. I started 7 minutes late with corral ‘D’ when u should have started with the elite corral. Great course and live going International. Detroit is my home town and I couldn’t have hoped for a better race. Weather – always unpredictable. Plan for anything.

Don’t expect huge bling at this race, since they save it for the longer races over the weekend. But there is still a huge crowd of runners for the 5k…almost 3,000 participants. Great vibe, great weather, great coordination.
