On The Move Race Management and Ionia Parks and Recreation present the XTERRA IONIA off road Triathlon, Duathlon and XTERRA Trail Run Series Event.
Triathlon legs are .5 mile swim, 12.5 mile bike and 3.4 mile run.
Duathlon legs are 2.0 mile run 12.5 mile bike and 3.4 mile run.
Swim (1/2 Mile): Counter clockwise swim starting on the beach. Large beach provides plenty of space for athletes without being crowded. Large swim buoys along with smaller buoys guide swimmers on the one loop swim. Sessions Lake provides plenty of swimming space with only two cabins located on the lake. No wake lake eliminates speed boats and wave runners. Canoes, Kayaks, motor boats and DNR officers will monitor swimmers.
T1/T2 and Bike (12.5 Miles): Transition located just off side walk from beach onto the parking lot. Large transition area for bikes with plenty of spectator green space to watch triathletes. From transition riders will proceed to the well-established Ionia Recreation MTB trails. The wide & wooded .7 mile entry onto the MTB trail leads directly to 5 plus miles of pure single track traversing state rec area. Located on back side of the MTB trail lies the Fred Meijer Grand River Valley Rail Trail. The newly constructed rail trail provides added trail space to accomplish the 12.5 mile bike leg. Rail trail consist of lime stone base providing riders with three cool bridges going over rivers along the course. A combination of single track and rail trail provides two distinct riding surfaces for athletes.
T3/T4 and Run (3.4 miles): Riders return to transition and head out to a 3.4 mile trail run. The 3.4 mile loop utilizes rolling wooded single track trail that circles Sessions Lake. It’s a challenging course with plenty of rolling hill climbs and foot bridges to cross Sessions Creek winding through the forest around the lake.
The XTERRA 3.5 and 7.0 mile Trail Run Series event will run in conjunction with our Triathlon and Duathon. All events are off road courses running through Ionia State Recreation Area.
Ionia State Recreation Area requires a Michigan Passport Pass or the purchase of a daily pass to enter the recreation area. This isn’t part of the registration fee and must be taken care of at park entry. NO RACE DAY REGISTRATIONS ACCEPTED SO PLAN ON REGISTERING PRIOR TO EVENT DAY.
