Hits the Sweet Spot
It’s not hard to see why we chose to bring a race to the Sunshine Coast – it’s literally in the name. When you’re finding a place to race, you want a dash of good weather, a course that suits everyone, and a place that just feels good to be there – that’s the sweet spot.
The race starts with a swim off the surf beach, followed by a flat and fast bike course, and finishing with the two-lap run course, around Mooloolaba’s Esplanade.
So, whether it’s your first time taking on the distance or you’re chasing down a PB – Sunny Coast is the place to race. The flat and friendly course, lined with spectators cheering you all the way to the finish line is perfect whether it’s your first or tenth IRONMAN 70.3.
Swim
Athletes will enjoy the experience of a rolling start to kick off the swim course at Mooloolaba’s spectacular surf beach! The ocean swim consists of a one lap counter-clockwise course, starting at the eastern, more sheltered end of Mooloolaba Beach and finishing approximately 120m west of the swim start.
Bike
The cycle leg begins from Transition at Parkyn Parade Park opposite the Mooloolaba Boat Ramp and heads out onto the Sunshine Motorway via Mooloolaba Esplanade and Buderim Avenue. The Motorway is fast and smooth with few undulations – perfect for a speedy bike time! Once off the highway, athletes will ride along the beachfront to Maroochydore and back, then back onto Buderim Avenue for a second lap before heading back into Transition in Mooloolaba.
Run
From Transition, runners will head east along The Spit and complete a lap of Point Park before heading north and onto the iconic Mooloolaba Boardwalk and Esplanade. After heading over the scenic Alexandra Headland Hill (the views are worth the leg burn!), athletes will continue to Cotton Tree via Sixth Avenue and Alexandra Parade. Athletes will follow the same route for the second lap along picture-perfect ocean shores before finishing on Beach Terrace, steps away from your beach recovery.
