If doing a triathlon is on your bucket list, then this is the triathlon for you! We wanted everyone to be able to experience the joy and awesome community that is triathlon, so in 2004 we created The Rookie Triathlon. This super sprint tri is a great beginner triathlon and is unique because of its separated Rookie (beginners) and Veterans (experience triathlete) waves. The course is beginner friendly but also great for those who are looking to speed on a short distance.
The Rookie Triathlon course begins with a short 300 meter loop swim in Decker Lake. The swim course is lined with trained lifeguards in kayaks to keep the event as safe as it is fun! Participants will make their way through transition to a 11.2 mile bike in a protected lane around the lake before returning for their transition to the run. Participants will then head onto a 2 mile run on smooth off-road paths through the park and back up the road path to the Finish Line Festival. From there, participants join others and spectators for celebrating with food, drinks, vendors, and more! Those who are over 21 can visit the beer tent and cheers to their accomplishments.
Every participant that crosses the finish line is presented with a unique commemorative Rookie Tri Finisher Medal!
The finish line may signal the end of the race but it is just the beginning of the PARTY! The Finish Line Party is stocked with goodies, good music, and fun fun fun! There will be bountiful refreshing drinks and yummy snacks for participants as well as a beer garden, flowing with beer from for participants over 21!

The swim is nice and easy, a quick triangle in the lake. You have to run uphill from the lake to T1, which kind of sucks, and there’s stickers in the grass, so be prepared to pull thorns from your toes. The bike is hilly, but quick. BE PREPARED on each downhill to go back up and shift accordingly! The run is off-road, so bring trail shoes if you have them, but it’s not incredibly hilly. The finish line festival is great, and the shirts were really cute the year I did it. Worth it and would do again.
