The Get Outside 8-Hour is at Windsor Castle Park in Smithfield, VA. It’s a companion race to the Windsor Castle 10-Hour hosted in June and designed as a chance for you to “Get Outside” rather than stay indoors and cyber shop or continually nibble on leftover Thanksgiving dinner items :-). This course is run in the opposite direction from our June companion race. The days after Thanksgiving are a time where those in the sports and outdoor groups are encouraging people to get outside, stretch your legs, and enjoy nature.
This is your chance to get in a nice long run or walk on a 2.94 mile trail (estimated at 150 feet each loop).
The run is hosted through “It’s Just A Training Run” and so feel free to come out and race the course to see how many miles you can get or just enjoy time on your feet and getting some nice miles walking and running along with other super cool endurance runners and walkers.
This is a low-key event, however laps will be counted and we’ll be keeping track of your miles (chip timed) so go for it!.
We’ll have awards for the top finishers and age categories, along with a home-made finisher’s medal for all runners.
We will have hydration and a variety of yummy pre-packaged “ultra-type” food items for runners, along with a few other items (hot soup later on in the day, runner item requests). We will not have an aid stations on the course mid-lap (but you don’t need it – it’s a 2.94 mile lap.
Runners are able to set up chairs or tents (no larger than 10×10) near the trail.
There is a solo runner option and a team option – EVERY runner is eligible for the top runner awards and age group awards. Teams are also eligible for an additional top miles award (top 3 mileage teams will win a TBD award – like a cool pint glass, etc…). I will contact runners starting in September to see if they want to field a team and will coordinate the teams with the team captains. You do not need to sign up as a team during your initial ultrasignup registration.
About the run itself
The run is on a 2.94 mile loop and runs in the opposite direction of the Windsor Castle 10-Hour. we are finalizing the course). There are two street crossings, however there is very minimal traffic in this area. The course will be marked. (The park is open from dawn to dusk, so your call if you want to max out the time it’s open).
Aid station: We will have water, HEED, and coke available for runners and walkers. We will also have Hammer gels, bananas, Oreos, pretzels, chips, broth, along with other sweet and salty aid station items.
Fall temps in Hampton Roads late November tend to be in the 50s, but it could vary so be sure to check the temp forecast leading up to the run. We will run rain or shine.

About Windsor Castle Park and Facilities On Site
Windsor Castle Park is a wonderful park located in the Town of Smithfield. If you’ve not visited the Town of Smithfield before or Isle of Wight County, please consider checking it out and staying for the weekend and supporting local businesses. It’s a lovely place to visit. If you have family or friends that might want to cheer you on they’ll definitely want to check out everything that’s happening in the community. It’s also super close to other wonderful tourist destinations if you’re looking to make this a “race-cation”, such as Colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens, and Virginia Beach.
