Welcome to the Phantom Trail Races! Run 3 Parks in 1 Race. We will be offering our 5M, 10M, 15M and 20M distances through the historic Santa Monica Mountains in Paramount Ranch, Reagan Ranch and Malibu Creek State Park. The namesake trail ~ Phantom ~ is located in the Liberty Canyon Natural Preserve, never celebrated in a race until our Inaugural event in 2017.
The Phantom Trail Races are run on a loop course. 10M, 15M and 20M runners will do the first big loop which is 10 Miles and takes runners on the race’s namesake trail ~ the Phantom Trail. 15 and 20 Milers will do a slightly bigger loop, but still on the “namesake” trail. The course consists of trails within Reagan Ranch, Malibu Creek State Park, sections of “the Liberty Canyon Preserve” across Mulholland Highway that had never been raced on before our inaugural race last year. If you’re doing the 15 or 20 Miler, you’ll be running in Paramount Ranch as well. We are beyond excited to bring this race back to you this year with a ***NEW 5 Mile option as well!
Runners will start and finish their race at the Historic Reagan Ranch located in the Northwest corner of Malibu Creek State Park. Runners will follow the stately row of Eucalyptus trees that once lined the driveway to Ronald and Nancy Reagan’s ranch home.
Once past their old barn, you’ll pickup the Yearling trail which leads to Deer Leg and Lookout trails. These will take you on a multi mile beautifully covered singletrack trail before descending onto Crag’s Road.
From here you will take the High Road to Grasslands and across Mulholland to the Liberty Canyon Preserve. This is where it gets fun!!! Follow Grasslands on a relatively flat, fast section to Liberty Canyon Road where you’ll be greeted by our friendly volunteers.
Here you will start your loop back to home base at “the Ranch”. Say goodbye to the flat trail and hello to the namesake of this race~the Phantom trail. This is the secret trail. The gem of the preserve. Let your feet lead the way up this climb to reveal views of Malibu Creek State Park you’ve never seen from within the park.
Once back at Mulholland Highway, you’ll cross it again to the cheers of your friends and volunteers. Refuel and rehydrate for your last mile and half!
Not ready to stop? Stay on course for one more loop for a total of 15 or 20 Miles. 15 and 20 Milers do a different loop inside Paramount Ranch. Congratulations – you’ve just raced three Parks in one Race!!!

Great MEDALS, GREATER SHIRTS, superb volunteers and goodies, management is top notch – and this run might be the toughest 10 miler I have done. Lots of rocks and steep uphills and downhills, and to accommodate cleanup sites from the Woolsey fire last year, the reroute added nearly two miles to the route. I used to ride the endurance rides – horses – up here, and I have a new appreciation for what I asked my horses to do! But – the VIEWS and the unique and stunningly beautiful views and trails were WORTH every second! At MY age, I don’t go fast, so my time STUNK but I recovered in a day, so I would consider this a MUST-DO event for its stellar qualities – but come with good quads and hams – and take plenty of water.
