Race scenery is as beautiful as it gets. The course is, indeed, hilly – however it seems that all the reviews and official information are tuned to intimidate the runners. Overall elevation gain is not that much more than some less flat city races. There is, however, Hurricane point climb, but it is manageable with proper planning. What is really hard and should not be underestimated is headwind. Also, the road is tilted in quite a few parts and this can be hard on your feet, so be prepared.
This race is hard(lottery!) and expensive to get into, so you may want to look into some of the other spectacular courses(this isn’t the only one), but if you have a chance to run it – don’t miss under any circuimstances.

Seriously, I saw a double rainbow spanning from one snowy mountain to another across the fjords. I doubt there can even be races with more beautiful scenery. I mean I love California’s rough coast and I did Big Sur which is advertised as one of the most beautiful marathons out there and the ads don’t lie at all, but still it’s no match for this one.
The course is also pretty much flat except for the rather gentle uphill and downhill when crossing the bridge(it might look high from distance but it’s barely noticeable when you run it), and there’s zero chance of hot weather spoiling your performance, so I guess this might be a good race for PR, although I did not even try to as I ran it 2 weeks after setting one, just to absorb the beauty.
Downside is that travelling to Norway is pretty expensive overall, they don’t even have such thing as cheap food, there’s expensive food and michelin-star level restaurants to choose from. Race entry fee may be not that high as some major marathons but it doesn’t even include a t-shirt. But if you can afford it, it is worth every penny. I had one short vacation at a price of two and no regrets. Also, Tromsø being a small town, influx of marathoners means every place serving pasta is going to be full!

I’ve run this race 4 times, 3 of them to a PR. There’s nothing not to like about it. Start area is smoothly organized, lines to porta-potties are manageable, spectators are cheerful, aid stations comfortably spaced. They usually give pickle spears near the half mark which are so tasty I had to ruin my result in 2016 by eating too much and hitting a porta-potty!
I’m not a big fan of racing in cities and rather prefer natural sceneries but Stockholm is beautiful and anyway visiting it is always a treat. Johan&Nyström serve their excellent coffee for free if you’re wearing a marathon bib!

As a resident of St Petersburg I love how beautiful our city is and a chance to run through it is worth a lot, even if a part of the course goes through some less-pleasant side streets, you just remember that’s the backdrop from Dostoevsky novels, almost unchanged over 150 years, and let that soak in. Also, the course is very flat which gives good PR chances. And – for some reason this feature is not advertised at all! – kilometer marks are young and beautiful girls holding large number cards. Sometimes boys…so I guess just volunteers, but still I have little doubt they try to choose ones for this duty by the looks.
If you’re a runner looking for a marathon destination, you can stop right here and look no further, chances are nothing will go wrong for you. However as a local who did this race 5 times…
– it’s middle of summer, it can get VERY hot, from ‘ruin PR attempt’ hot to ‘health hazard and heat-induced stroke’ hot.
– very few aid stations, one in every 5K. Only 25K one has isotonic drinks, others are solely water.
– race organizers have a history of changing race start time the last moment, failing to record chip times and such.
– race t-shirts are garbage, sometimes it’s not even a tech shirt, just cotton.
– while there is much more spectator support now unlike that other review from ’11, you’re still likely to meet angry drivers when crossing a major street which is closed to traffic to let the runners pass. Especially if you for whatever reason switch to walking at that moment.
