This is a race with serious hills and gorgeous views. I looked right and saw San Francisco, Marin, Oakland, the bay, the bridges and Mt. Tam (Sleeping Beauty). I looked left and saw Mt. Diablo and the valley. One of the most beautiful Bay Area races but one of the most challenging.

The race lives up to the hype. The course is not flat. There are large rolling hills the first half. The second half flattens out with the final 4+ miles a gentle downhill grade. The course will take its toll but when turning to the inspiring finish facing the State Capitol building I’m always pleasantly surprised at my better than expected time. Spectators are good and all volunteers encourage everyone to do their personal best. Weather is always to be considered though mostly good.

There were lots of hills, mostly fire road but also single track. It was tough but exceedingly beautiful. The weather was perfect. The aide stations were well stocked with fuel and very friendly volunteers. Whatever we needed, we had help getting it. My time was slower than expected but comparable to others. Briones Park is one of my favorite settings.
