Packet pick up was fairly smooth although I had to ask around to find exactly where the packets were – the expo was on the main level but packets were on the 3rd level. I didn’t see signs but there were enough other runners around to ask and find my way. The shuttle for my hotel was disappointing. I and another runner were waiting by the front of the Bay Motel as instructed on the shuttle info, wondering where the shuttle was, only to see it pull off of a side street (not visible from the front of the hotel) and leave us behind. Luckily we weren’t too far from the start (a little over a mile), but we had to walk to the start line. Not a good way to start the day! More specific info is needed on the shuttle pick up info (street name would have been helpful!) The staging area at the start was well organized, space was available for warm up, Lambeau field atrium was open for restrooms and stretching and corral start was nice even with a smaller field. Least crowded start I’ve ever experienced which I appreciate. The race itself I found to be scenically a bit boring – many residential neighborhoods. No fault of the race but there was a strong N wind along the river stretch for 7 straight miles which took a lot out of me. What I did not like were all of the turns (there were so many, some of which were tight and one right after another) and several places where you had to cross curbs with no ramps. Also a few railroad crossings. I guess the flatness of the course makes up for these things though.
Des Moines Marathon
One of the best mid sized marathons

I love mid-sized marathons and this one was fantastic. The course itself is great – tons of trees, beautiful neighborhoods, parks, lakes, the Drake track… the course has it all. Beware of the hills – they will make you pay in the later miles if you have not trained well for them. They are consistently one after another in miles 2-8 or 9. I definitely underestimated them. Race support was the best I’ve seen. Excellent volunteers, residents out in front of their homes, kids handing out candy, porta potties every mile or two, plenty of water/Gatorade/GU, and the bike support was not something I’ve seen before but was a very nice addition. Lots of musicians on the course also which I enjoyed. Now for the cons: no water until mile 4???? Thankfully it was a cool day, but that is too far to go without liquids when you have 22 more miles ahead of you. At the finish line, I couldn’t find the post race food?? I found the water, beer (yeah!) and the pizza, but other than that I don’t know where it could have been. I asked a few volunteers, they didn’t seem to know. Maybe there wasn’t anything else – so either way, add food or make it clear where it is. I was also looking for the massage tables and couldn’t find those either. But overall, great race.
