What a beautiful race! Very few races occur inside a national park, making the Acadia National Park Half Marathon a true find! The race starts and ends at the local YMCA and the event is a fundraiser for the Y. This is not an easy course. The elevation change is a little over 1000 ft. Lots of water/Gatorade stations. Very chill and relaxed. I stayed at my hotel and my husband dropped me off at the starting line 15 minutes before the race started. Race started on time. Race director was so nice. It had rained and I was soaked and cold, so I approached the race director about getting my age group award early before the awards ceremony so I could go home and get out of my cold wet clothes and she did (I got a YMCA mug for being first in my age group). This race is capped at 400 runners and sells out early. I think the event sold out three or four months before race day if I remember correctly. There’s also a 10k as well. I would recommend this race to anyone who loves amazing views and isn’t afraid of hills! Such a great race and so happy I ran it!

Great Lakes Endurance cares a lot about putting on a great trail race and it shows! From everything from: starting on time, a choice of two different race shirts, nice medals and age group awards (top three in each age group get a Klean Kanteen Steel Pint etched with “Great Lakes Endurance”), nice locally grown/made post race snacks, to even plenty of port o pots at the start and finish, this race had lots of wonderful features. The trail itself was somewhat technical and difficult for someone like me who prefers road racing. But the race is well-run, thoughtful, and everyone there was so nice and supportive. And the location is beautiful and great for vacationing. We spent the following day at Mackinaw Island. I highly recommend!!!

If the hills on this race course don’t kill you, you will absolutely love the Flying Pig. Excellent crowd support, great atmosphere, lots of fun. That being said, I think this is the toughest course I’ve run. It is not easy. But it was a blast and I plan to run it again for sure! I stayed in one of the suburban hotels overnight, but I’m not sure I will do that again. I will probably stay downtown next time. We thought we found good parking on race morning, but later received a bill in the mail for $80 for parking.
For how much it cost to park downtown, I think next time I will get a downtown hotel. But other than the parking, everything was great. Nice swag, too. Runners even get a frameable poster. The Flying Pig lived up to its reputation as a very fun race.

This is the only race I’ve ever attended where I’ve been laughing while waiting for the race to begin! If you like the movie at all, you will love this race. Runners get a free tour of the prison before or after the race. This alone is worth coming out for the race. There’s a costume contest every year where people are encouraged to dress up as prisoners or jailers to win prizes. The guy who runs in a full suit every year and who looks just like the character who played the warden in the movie is a riot. Half of the runners are called “inmates” and half are jailers. Whichever group of runners “beat the warden” get a discount on next year’s race. He’s so friendly and will pose with all the runners before, during (yes, runners take selfies with the warden while they pass him) and after the race. There are always nice prizes for the top three finishers in each age group. But the medals are the most amazing medals I’ve ever received. Check out the picture. They have multiple moving pieces (yes, the pick axe actually comes out of the Bible) and are the most creative medals I’ve ever seen. One warning about this race: This race is very hilly. I hate hills, but I run it every year anyway because the race is so much fun. Also, any money raised from the race is put towards keeping this historic landmark from being torn down.
