It’s as gorgeous as it is difficult. You run almost the entire time next to the Pacific Ocean, running through the mountains, bridges, forest and farms. It was cloudy, rainy, windy, and cold on this day, and the elevation changes are tricky. I assumed the uphills would be the hardest part, but the downhills are actually tougher on your knees. The volunteers and other runners had fantastic energy, but you don’t have spectators like most urban races until the very very end.
I did have to wake up at 1am to eat and start getting ready, and then we drove to one of the hotels in the area where you get on the bus to drive you an hour to Big Sur. After getting to Big Sur at 4:45am, there were two hours of waiting in the cold rain before race starts, and the corrals they have you wait in are pretty small for the amount of runners. They did have coffee and other drinks there but I had brought my own.
The line for portos 20 minutes before race start was so long I decided to wait until the race started to go, but every aid station with portos had a line so long it wasn’t until mile 13 or 14 I finally managed to find available portos with a small line. The first hour flew by, and it wasn’t until miles 21 and 22 that it started to get really hard. By that point, I was hungry, tired, time had slowed down, and I was taking longer walk breaks. The strawberry they give you at mile 23.5 is massive and definitely helped me get back into running on pace to finish strong.
There may not be another marathon in the world that can match the gorgeous Pacific Ocean views this race offers. The entertainment was also great, with multiple drum lines, a pianist at the iconic Bixby bridge you can hear from miles away, and a Brazilian samba group too. I wish the food options were a little better, they disappointed me a bit. Expo was great, production and swag were good. Definitely a race you want to experience.

This race is two loops around Presque Isle in Erie, PA. On this day, it was cloudy, windy, cold, and it rained the entire time. The course is as flat as it gets, with a total elevation change of maybe 30ft over the entire race. A ton of people come here to get qualified for Boston.
The views were okay, it probably looks better when it’s not cloudy and rainy, but the second loop is particularly tougher because you’ve seen it all before, and I was seeing all the faster runners than me completing their second lap as I was completing the first. There were some birds like turkeys and herons here and there which was cool. The medal was a blue heron and it was so heavy I only had it on for the pictures and then took it off. You have to park up the hill and then walk like a mile to where the portos are and where the race starts. Going back up that hill after running a marathon is significantly tougher, so my partner drove down as close as he could to pick me up. The expo was easy to navigate, nothing too extra, and the race swag was pretty basic. This was my first marathon and I’m glad I started here.
