This is a beautiful race in the Sierra National Forest just outside Yosemite!

Expo: Bib pick-up day before the race was located at Bass Lake (the finish area for the race) and went smoothly. There are a couple of merch and vendor tents, and the lake is a great place to chill and relax before the race.

Start logistics: Getting to the start required parking by Oakhurst High School and taking a shuttle. This was the worst part of the race experience. Vacation Races updated us all the night before saying one of the shuttle company owners had unexpectedly passed away so there would be fewer shuttles than normal. The line of runners was massive and I ended up waiting almost 2 hours, and the ride up to the start took another 30 minutes. There was coffee and fruit by the start line, but the portapotties were mostly out of toilet paper. The start line was a rolling start which was nice because it wasn’t crowded at all.

The course: The first 5 miles on the dirt trail were absolutely beautiful and my favorite part of the race. The trail wasn’t technical but there were a few muddy spots and some rocks to watch out for. It starts going downhill about 4 miles in and eventually switches to road. It’s a VERY long downhill until about mile 10 and took a beating on my quads/knees. The last 3 miles were around Bass Lake past lakefront houses. This part also shares the road with cars so it was less fun to run on. The last quarter mile or so turns back onto a grassy area right before the finish.

The finish: We were immediately met with medals and some awesome snack boxes right after crossing the finish line. Lots of people were also hanging out by the lake and taking a dip.

Overall this race was great aside from the shuttle experience. Pre-race communication was also super detailed and helpful.

I’ve run this race twice, in 2022 and 2024.
Pros:
1) Beautiful course that starts by the Washington Monument and goes past several other memorials, with the last few miles through rows of cherry blossoms in East Potomac Park. Also flat as a pancake.
2) Fantastic communication leading up to the race and super detailed website with all relevant information
3) Option to opt out of a t-shirt or purchase a medal – great sustainability effort which also lowers the registration cost if you don’t care about swag

Cons:
1) Bag check at the finish line in 2024 was incredibly disorganized. It was not like this in 2022 so I’m not sure what went wrong this time (lack of volunteers?) but I literally waited 45 minutes in line to get my bag back.
2) The course can get pretty congested at times, especially in the sections that are out and back

This is an incredibly scenic and well-run race. The half marathon course is absolutely beautiful, winding past the ocean at Brenton Point State Park and all the mansions in Newport. There are some hills but nothing crazy.

Logistics were very well organized. There was ample parking with shuttles to the start/finish area at Easton’s Beach. Lots of food at the finish including pizza! The medal is also one of my favorites – it’s shaped like a clamshell that opens.

The hills in this race are very challenging! But the scenery is top notch. This was personally a difficult race for me given the hills and also the elevation as I live at sea level.

There were some fun freebies at the finish line area including massages!

Logistics wise, getting in and out of the parking lot was a mess. There is only one road in so all the cars were backed up and they had to delay the start of the race due to this.
