Gettysburg North & South Marathon Review
🏃 Course (3/5)

This course is no joke when it comes to hills—think San Francisco-level climbing and rolling terrain that never really lets up. It’s a tough one, and it will wear you down by the end.

One important note: despite the name, the race is not actually run on the Gettysburg battlefield, so don’t expect a historical tour or scenic battlefield miles. The course is also a loop/circuit format, meaning you run the half marathon course twice, which can feel mentally repetitive the second time around.

🎉 Organization & Atmosphere (3.5/5)

The production is solid and everything runs smoothly, but it’s missing a bit of energy or “pizzazz” compared to bigger destination races. That said, the small-town vibe is genuinely enjoyable, and volunteers are friendly and supportive throughout.

Logistics were easy for me since I used to live in the area, but if you’re traveling in without local connections, it may take a little more planning.

💧 Aid Stations & Support (4/5)

Aid stations are small but well-stocked and well-managed, with helpful volunteers. Gel, water, and basic support were all consistent and reliable throughout the race.

🎽 Swag & Finisher Perks (4/5)

Some really nice touches here:

Free pint glasses at the finish
Beer available (including a really good Appalachian IPA, plus non-alcoholic options)
Solid race T-shirt
Large spinning finisher medal, which is actually a standout feature
🍻 Post-Race Scene (3.5/5)

You’ll be tired after this one, but there are good bars and restaurants nearby in town for recovery food and drinks, which helps round out the experience.

Dope medal! Great staff that was incredibly helpful. Plenty of water hydration stations with Nuun electrolytes. Really great spectator presence. Only thing I was bothered by, only a little, was that the course runs a little long. My watch ticked almost 26.6 which made my marathon time a little off with my biometric data. Could be an issue with my Garmin, not totally sure.

Running the Big Sur Marathon was an unforgettable experience. The breathtaking scenery along Highway 1 made every mile worth it, and the hills added a great challenge. The volunteer support was incredible—so encouraging—and everything was very well organized. The sense of community among runners was inspiring. My only suggestion: I wish there had been an easier way to get photos from specific scenic spots, because the views were just that amazing!

A real international half and full! I completed the half and I have to say it was a great experience! I really loved the 3 miles through Windsor Canada (it’s so clean on that side lol), and all of the people involved in it were so helpful and seriously excited for everyone else. The bridge is an amazing sight and passing through it into another country makes it that much more iconic! Highly recommend!

I loved the medal and the race shirt! Really thought it was challenging, but it’s San Fran, so I expected some hills. Weather for me was excellent, relatively dry and cool most of the race. This might be an outlier of a year, but it was a nice one really!
