I am working on 50 states and combined this with the Newport half marathon to do two in a weekend. Overall I think the race was great, and very well organized and supported. Running along the coast was great. There were a few hills here and there but overall the course wasn’t a huge challenge and I was happy to set a PR on this course after about 35 half marathons! 🙂
The wind was not great… and a good tailwind is never as helpful as a bad headwind is… but overall the weather was tolerable and pleasant.
Des Moines Marathon
Great event, swag, and post-race food!

This was a mostly flat course. Only some parts of it were there and back, but got to run around some nice scenic areas without any really gnarly hills, etc. The shirt/light jacket we got was actually really nice and I’ve been wearing it a few times since, it looks cool and is actually fairly warm! Decent amount of crowd out there cheering people on and good aid stations. Medal was also nice! I was doing this as part of my 50-state goal so I won’t be repeating, but it did not disappoint! Only a few things I’d improve:
-The start was an “all at once”, which led to a slightly congested start. I was sort of middle of the pack, not sure how it was towards the back. A corral start might be preferred.
-To pick up our packets, had to pay to park. It was only $10, just kind of annoying, most races have this figured into the cost of the race.
Kansas City Marathon
Well produced, decent swag, nice medals

Packet pickup and expo was in a good location at Union Station that allowed me to get familiar with the area and the start line, etc. before race day. Parking was a bit hectic for the packet pickup, but I got there plenty early on race day so parking was a snap. Nice that it was free for packet pickup. The giveaway shirt was meh and didn’t really fit, but will work fine on my shirt blanket :).
The race itself was rainy and cold, but that’s not their fault! Unfortunately it rained so hard there were a lot of puddles that couldn’t be avoided and I ended up running with wet feet and getting some blisters, but such is life. Aid stations were at decent distances, and there were some good crowds out at various locations to cheer people on. There were a few hills, but nothing really unreasonable.
Only minor complaint was the post-race food… waited in line for probably a half hour or so for a bbq sandwich which didn’t have much meat on it… but the music was jamming and everyone seemed in good spirits despite the weather!
