This was my first time running this race. I really likes the tour through the neighborhoods in Monona and the views around the lake were nice too. While running through the neighborhood sections you got a small break from the hot sun since there are a number of large trees providing some shade.

The course was a mixture of rolling hills through the neighborhood sections and pancake flat through the parks and near the water. Elevation gain of 282′ and elevation loss of 279′

The “afterparty” had a live band and beers in the tent with a few snacks. Unfortunately, anyone who didn’t purchase an “all you can drink” band for $40 couldn’t join you in the tent. That’s a bummer because $40 for 1-2 beers at 10am is a little steep IMO. Having the option to buy a single beverage would have been a nice option for non-runners.

I ran the Great Grandma’s Challenge (5k on Friday night, Marathon on Sat). The event is really superb – the expo, the 5k, the transportation to the start – the spectators!!!!

The course is mostly flat with some rollers from start to finish, but nothing too aggressive. I’ve run the GB Half a few times and while the last 13.1 miles have more spectators – the first half of the Marathon goes by quickly thanks to the flat conditions.

The pack didn’t start to thin out until mile 5, so plan on keeping one eye on the road and one on the person ahead of you – saw a few folks bite some pavement because they weren’t paying attention.

Rain this year made it cooler than ideal after the race – bummer, because the after party and live music is always a good time at Bayfront.

The course is an out and back with a twist – the highway is closed to traffic and you get to run through a series of three tunnels each way. Most of the time the scenery is nothing much – concrete, etc – but every now and then when you emerge from one of the tunnels you get some spectacular views of Lake Superior (at least for the first 3 miles).

Once you make your turn, the scenery fades as you’re now heading southbound on the highway and won’t have much to look at until the last mile when you turn towards the Duluth harbor and finally finish near the William A Irvin – a retired (and now museum) great lakes freighter.

This is a great race – spectators line the course from start to finish. Great views the entire way and plenty of refreshments along the way too. One thing I love about this race is the sun is at your back the whole way – you never have to stare into the sun and for this I skip the sunglasses and can concentrate on running rather than losing a pare of specs! The course is mostly flat – with a couple of hills towards the end (both up and down).

My first time at this race – it was a wet and rainy day, but that didn’t stop the runners. Didn’t stop the inline skaters either as this race is one of many events going on under the Northshore Inline Marathon weekend banner – there are half, 10k for runners and also inline skate events going on.

The course is an out and back through the tunnels in Duluth. Get some peaks of Lake Superior and a close up of the harbor near the finish line too.

I hit my PB on this race recovering from an injury!
