I don’t make this post lightly because I know what goes into a race. First, the start line was the finish line but the only banner across the top was “Finish.” I heard many people asking the RD where the start line was. I know it’s on the map that was sent but it shouldn’t be that way. While that seems like a small detail but it’s the small details that make a race a great race. The course was nice, I enjoy hills and the views were good. However, when crossing Merrimon Ave, a busy 3 lane road, there was one officer way down the road which made this a dangerous crossing. The second issue was the missing person to direct runners which caused the front of the pack to get off course, I did an extra .4 and some did an extra .7. This all could have been avoided if there were signs. The only signs throughout the entire course were along Beaver Lake. The race director did send an apology email but this should have never happened. It caused all of us to cross Merrimon at an even more dangerous portion. Again, it’s the little things that make a race a great race. Finally, there was only water and Gatorade on the course. No bananas, no oranges, no gels. This race cost as much as the bigger races so IMO, there’s no excuse. The finish line refreshments were almost gone as well as only granola bars, fruit snacks, and crackers. Not what will refuel someone after a race. I have run over 40 half marathons, 9 fulls, 2 ultras, and more 5Ks and 10Ks than I can count so I am not a newbie with high expectations other than safety, good course markings, and price appropriate course support. I count myself lucky to say that out of all my races this is the first one that I will never do again.

This has become one of my required races for each year. VR puts on an amazing race with awesome bling that really BLINGS! The course isn’t what I call difficult but challenging. There is a slant to the road for water runoff which can cause some hip issues if you’re not careful but its’ easily remedied by sliding up or down the slant. The scenery is amazing, especially when the fog. The follow runners are very friendly and help each other. It is a cupless race but you can get a cup if you need one when you register. I appreciate it being as close to zero waste as they can get. Don’t shy away from the cost, the medals are some of the best I have. It’s well worth the cost!! Also, go for the Black Bear Double,

This is a great primer race for the half marathon the next day. The medal are TOP NOTCH plus they place the top 5 from each division. You do run on an open road but it’s safe and get to see a lot of Townsend which a lot of people miss. It is cupless so be sure to bring your own drinking vessel for the finish line. You can’t go wrong with doing this race.

AS always Pigworks put on an amazing race. This year was amazing and the weather for Sunday was epic!! My fellow runners and I embraced it and had so much fun doing it. The course support was second to none, even with the monsoon. I did all 4 races and will be doing the same again. I can’t imagine a year not doing the FP!

This was GSM half #2 for me and I love it. I actually did the Double Black Bear (5K and Half) and both were great races. The VR team puts on a seamless race and you would never know if there was a problem unless they tell you. The course is beautiful along the Little River and a slow steady incline isn’t an issue. The road does have a hard slant to the right and this will wear on you so be prepared for that. The medals are amazing and they place five deep so there’s plenty of bling to go around.

This is a great race for new runners and experienced runners alike! I’ve run 50 plus races in 4 different states and this was one of the smoothest I’ve been in. The scenery is awesome, the amenities are great, the swag is fantastic. I ran the Black Bear Double and loved both races. The slant in the road is nothing to ignore but didn’t cause me any issues.
