My biggest beef with this race was the lack of food. No fruit, no real food. I was shocked. I’ve written to the DR team and hope they seriously consider changing their practices.
The course was pretty and the post race wine and music were great, but overall I think this one requires improvement.

I saw a post on Facebook advertising this race and I nearly flipped. I’ve been to Estes Park many times because Rocky Mountain National Park is simply the most beautiful place I’ve ever been, so I decided in that moment that I’d sign up having never run more than 3 miles. I trained for 7 months to get ready and I pushed myself beyond anything I’d ever thought I could do. Arriving at the race and meeting new people was the icing on the cake. The course views do not disappoint — stunning mountain views through out. I experienced Estes in a whole new way and I couldn’t be more grateful.
Things to know: the elevation map for the race can be misleading. I spent a lot of time studying it and thinking there was one giant long hill, which there was, but the incline was so subtle I actually turned to the person running next to me and said where was that hill?! Don’t get me wrong there are hills in this race for sure!
Something else to know — I am from Tampa, Florida average elevation of 46 ft and Estes Park is an average of 7,600 ft. I had no issue at all adjusting. I got in a few days early, went to the highest possible elevation before the race and drank lots of water — seriously I had NO issues. In fact, my pace was the same as it was at home which I was told wasn’t possible. If you’ve never been somewhere with these elevations, than I would say you should follow these steps for sure!
What I would change about this race is the start & finish. I hate to say this because the race us simply stunning and I would highly encourage anyone who is interested to go, but I really think they need to re-think those parts. I am not a fan of running on sidewalks, which is what happens at the start and finish. I like to be able to see the finish line, I felt like the whole race took on a different feel once I hit that sidewalk again. I hope they will reconsider that for future races.
I love the Vacation Races experience so much that I’ve signed up for 2 more this year. Really well organized! Highly recommend their races and this race in particular for one of the most scenic races you’ll ever do!
