What can I say? This is a race where you start in pig pens, not corrals, where racers wear pig ears, noses, tails and tutus (always in pink), and where volunteers are lovingly called grunts and children are dubbed piglets. It’s an amazing race; one of the best marathons ever! (And I’ve run more than 50!)
MY STORY: It’s been a long time since I’ve done a road race. I forgot how road runners bullet out of the gate, with some people zig-zagging through the tightly-packed racers, trying to find their ideal position on the street. Fortunately, with plenty of hills in this race route, the crowd of runners soon thins and settles into a nice rhythm of uphill chugs and downhill scurries. Once I settled in, here’s what I saw on my very hilly 42.2k run:
-Gatorade/Water stations… every. single. mile.
-A wee white dog with the cutest face ever, all kitted up in a pig-pink jacket complete with custom wings.
-At least 20 “treat” stations (in addition to aid stations), each with its own unique sponsor and matching delicacy: girl guides with cookies, teen organizations with Doritos, a village bar with (electrolyte) jello shots, and a local save-the-animals with Swedish fish! (I kid you not).
-Funny signs like, “Go pig, or go home,” “You’re bacon it look easy,” and “Time to pig up the pace”! (For the record, I also appreciated the sign that said, “Run like your phone battery is at 1%”)
-Wall to wall spectators who enthusiastically cheer for every single runner who goes by… often with song, dance, and musical accompaniment; sometimes with an all-ages neighbourhood party percolating in the background; and often dressed as pigs!
-Dozens of Streakers who have run The Flying Pig every year of its 27-year existence.
-Racers of all ages and backgrounds supporting each other to push their own limits so they could cross the Finish Swine, and claim their Piggie finisher medal.
(Yes, friends, I cried just a little when I completed this particular race!)
It is an absolute “MUST RUN” on your list of races. Don’t miss it.
