Course Difficulty – moderate based on the course profile (a wee bit hilly), Scottish Highlands weather and an exposed starting area.

Course Scenery – Beautifully rugged mountain surroundings at the start descends quickly into mix of pastures, forests and water while enjoying rolling country road course. Nature, runners and a sparse numbers of spectators (until the later stages when you approach Inversess) reminded me of the Big Sur Marathon.

Race Production: A seasoned race director and team delivered an excellent experience.

Race Swag – Medal, shirt, pre and post-race festivals were all very nice. A wonderful regional event.

I co-hosted our first group of runners for this years marathon, half marathon and 10k. The following is a composite of the groups feedback:
The Course Difficulty:
– It was a difficult course, especially the second half, but the views along the way were just phenomenal and worth every hill and pain :-).
– SPECTACULAR COURSE! It was a very difficult course, but the views were INCREDIBLE! It was completely worth the additional challenge.
– The hills are tough. The wind was tougher. It is a difficult course for average runners. But the scenery makes up for the effort to get to the finish.
Course Scenery:
– Most beautiful road marathon that I’ve done.
– Gorgeous! Stunning! Unreal.
– Breathtaking! Stunning!
Race Production:
– I didn’t expect much support being in the middle of nowhere. The markings where small due to wind so that is also understandable.
– A big shout-out to the local folk who were at the water and supply stops in the gusty winds all day. They were absolutely wonderful.
– I found the last few hundred meters of the course not as well marked as I would have liked.
– Love that it ended at our hotel, best finish area ever.
– Amazing they award so many categories, but they messed up the execution and it took too long for the marathon.
Race Swag:
– Very nice the bag was picked up and in my room.
– Loved the design and colors
– The buff was very useful for this trip, particularly during the W trek.
– Nice shirt
Looking forward to 2019!

I first traveled to Bhutan to run the Thunder Dragon Marathon last year. I enjoyed the race and unique Himalayan Kingdom travel experience so much that I brought clients with me this year. I was happy to see the following client comments echoed my first impressions from a year ago.
– Loved the course….it was difficult but so so so enjoyable….the scenery was spectacular… the single track was FUN! Course markings were excellent, rest stops plentiful
– Well supported ESPECIALLY for such a small run, and great hat and shirts.
– Many volunteers along the course and aid stations at the right locations.
– The pre-race Buddhist blessing, the local runner’s enthusiasm and the scenery all combined to create a very spiritual experience.
– Terrific job sharing photos

The course was a very scenic combination of downtown Reykjavik, residential neighbourhoods, city parks, rivers and the seaside. While light on fan support, the running trails portions along the seaside and the country’s most popular salmon river provided spectacular views of the ocean, mountains and a few glaciers. The start / finish in downtown Reykjavik had a lot of fan support and was conveniently just a block or two away from the majority of the hotels. Beautiful course, people and country!

A bonus is the race being held in conjunction with Culture Night, an event that takes place all across central Reykjavik, with celebrations in the streets and squares, in museums, businesses and residential gardens! Reykjavik Culture Night marks the start of the city’s cultural year, when museums and theatres and other cultural institutions launch their annual programs of events. The main objective of Reykjavik Culture Night is to deliver a diverse and rich offering of cultural events from 1-11pm, ending with a magnificent firework show by the harbour. All events are free of charge for everyone to enjoy.

Before and after race day I enjoyed exploring Iceland’s natural wonders (including a post-race soak in the Blue Lagoon) with a great group of people that had booked with Marathon Tours.
