This race is mostly flat, mostly out-and-back. Many people PR at this race because of the course. PCH feels like it goes on forever and can get a little monotonous. The plus side of an out-and-back is that you can see your fellow runners on the other side of the road, which is especially fun if you’re part of a running club or team.

This year I was pleased to see an abundance of portapotties on the course, and very short, if any, lines for them. (In other races, I’ve lost significant time to portapotty lines)

The event is well organized. The expo is great and on-course support is great.

They could improve upon enforcement of the waves. Plenty of people didn’t pay any attention at all to the bib number signs, so runners of different paces were all mixed together.

Difficulty: For the most part it’s a flat, fast course, with just one hilly part in the middle. I’ve PR’d this race twice in the two times I’ve run it.
Scenery: On one hand, I can’t complain about running so near to the beach. On the other hand, this is mostly an out-and-back race, so the long miles along a straight road can get really monotonous. However, since I run this race with a club, I actually like the out-and-back aspect because I get to see all my fellow teammates, cheer for them, maybe even give a few high fives across the center median.
Race Production: My experience in the expo/packet pickup was efficient, and they had lots of good booths. The race logistics were good, and the surfboard medal is unique and very cool. The shirt in 2014 was better than the shirt in 2015.
Weather: The weather is typically excellent for running in February, a little cool.
