This was my second 50 miler. To be honest, in the middle of the race my thoughts were along the line of “I’m not doing this again.” By the time I finished (20+ hours later) I was ready to sign up for 2022.
It’s a great time of year to run something long distance in the Arizona desert. The day was pleasant and sunny, and after dark it got cold. Plan ahead with layers and lights.
The course has some rocks and sand, but the hills are manageable. The scenery is spectacular desert, and at night the stars are magical. Coyotes sing in the hills to serenade you on your journey.
The aid stations are pretty decent with a variety of food and drink. The volunteers are extremely supportive and helpful.
Gaiters are helpful, as well as trekking poles.
