So first thing you need to know is that after you park your car, you’ve got at least a mile hike to the start. Also–although you walk through a really gorgeous pumpkin filled garden (on your way to the start) once the race starts you are totally OUT of the arboretum. Neat baseball cap for finishers–really nice. The heat along with running along water created near sauna like conditions but it was still really fun. I recommend.

I’ve run 27 half-marathons since 2016 and 4 of those were this race–and I don’t live particularly close to Philadelphia–I live in Texas! But that’s just how much I love it. It seems to me that “the City of brotherly love & sisterly affection” shows up big time for this event…truly–everyone (from runners to race workers to the people in the crowd) seem to be having the best day of their life which creates the happiest energy. Course is not difficult & portopotties are plentiful. I don’t care about the medal but I do care that shirts are typically tiny. (I’m a solid M but in this race, I require an XL so beware!)

The water stations/gatorade stations were abundant and in all the right places. The volunteers seemed really pretty tired of it all (for the most part) by the time I came through, but then I was at the back of the pack. TONS of photographers (maybe too many?) but overall a good experience. Checked a bag and picked it up without a problem. One comment re: the course: for about 2 miles when running by the river, the road itself is on a pretty sharp slope. For some folks, that’s not going to be an issue; for me with my ankles and knees (I’m 60) I wasn’t too fond of it. But overall–had a good time. Well organized and the woman they had sending runners off had great energy and was really bouncing around up there (despite being maybe 5-6 months pregnant–she was fun). I didn’t rate the swag as particularly good but the truth is I couldn’t care less about stuff like that. I participate for the experience itself and the stuff you get to take home with you is gravy at best. (BTW–I’d like to see the Rock n Roll folks do something that shows some variation from race to race…I’ve now been in 3 or 4 this year and except for different color shirts with slightly different logos, they all look a like. They’re all made from the same material and they’re just getting boring as such.)
