With all the great reviews in the past I was expecting a lot more. The course was nice but course management was awful with runners lost and safety issues galore. Starting area had a paucity of bathrooms and 40 minute lines Afterparty was an afterthought. The race lost its local director and it is now run by a for profit and it shows. A lot of races were stuffed into one day to maximize profit it appears. The jacket and medal were nice but doesn’t make up for a poorly run event. Simply not nearly the experience it was held out to be…

While challenging as one would ever want this was a very well run race. But the thing that I though differentiated it was all of the support groups at the aid stations. My favorite was the bacon station and the kids handing out the cold towels were a godsend (if they were iced next time it would be even better!) The post party was one of the best I’ve ever seen and the city was a lot of fun. OTR, Skyline Chili and Sleepy Bee. Will definitely do again!

Want sure how much I’d enjoy this smaller race after Chicago but it was terrific! Organization was optimal and all of the volunteers and organizers were unbelievably friendly and helpful. The gift bag was unbelievable with a huge assortment of Garden of Life products. I’ve never seen anything else that compares.

The race course itself is really pleasant and fast with little in the way of hills. Can get warm but prevailing wind is from the east so there was always a nice breeze. Aid stations were plentiful and well stocked. Tangents are really easy to see and run. Plenty of parking. Definitely became one of my favorite races…

If this race was closer to civilization I suspect it would be much more popular. That said, the scenery is absolutely spectacular and worth the drive alone. Organization is well done and efficient and everyone was remarkably friendly. It was unusually hot but there was plenty of water and gatorade and gels. The finisher boot spur made it really unique. The town of Valentine is an outdoor mecca and combining the race with a kayak trip down the Niobrara river the next day made for a perfect weekend. Doing Chicago later this year, but this is the other end of the spectrum and anyone looking for a beautiful course but not overwhelming difficulty with friendly people should give it strong consideration.

I ran this race two years ago and the production was just so much better this year. The post-race area was really well organized and run. The aid-stations were well-stocked and the swag was much improved with great looking medals. The first-time pre-race party was also nicely done and i suspect will only continue to improve.

Honestly, this is a terrific race course. There are probably few more amazing views on any course in the country that compare to sunrise over the Detroit River as you cross the Ambassador Bridge. Running in a foreign country and then coming back via the only underwater mile is also pretty interesting. The course is actually pretty technically challenging and between the bridge, tunnel and all the turns on the first half, it isn’t easy to save fuel for the second half, which is really the easier and prettier half of the race. A negative split strategy isn’t a bad idea.

I don’t typically like to race the same course multiple times, but I’ll be back for more in the Motor City……
