I’ve run the 5k for the last 3 years and this year decided on the 10k for whatever reason. Although the 10k was perfectly nice, the fact that it started earlier meant it was still bright out and it was HOT. I think what I love most about the 5k is that it starts once the sun goes down and its just a different vibe with all the glowing paraphernalia. At the end of the day its a great crew running the show, the paseos are very nice to run on, its for a great cause and the shirt and medal never disappoint. I’ll be back for years to come, but will stick to the 5k.

The good points:
1) Course it self was really nice – mostly bike/walk paths and then road closer to the finish line. It was very well marked and controlled. There were a few other runners and cyclists, but not enough to slow you down.
2) The post race party was great! There was plenty of food (waffles, fresh fruit, juice, pretzels, snack mix) and Sierra Nevada Beer!! Live band. Lots of products to check out.
3) Cute medal.
4) Shuttle service was good–I recommend the 530am (even though that one sells out faster than the 430am).
5) Aid stations were a plenty and well stocked.
6) The crowds along the run were AWESOME!! Such good energy.
Now for the bad:
1) Even though its billed a “downhill race” in my mind I think I was imagining more of a downhill and mentally found it harder than I think I anticipated. A few hundred feet over 13 miles isn’t really that significant.
2) We didn’t start until closer to 7, even though start time was 630. It was kind of a weird setup where everyone was just in a pile and then had to take this hairpin to get to the starting line
3) It was freezing cold at the starting line. Like uncomfortably cold–even with extra layers. I only looked at Ventura weather when I was planning and forgot that starting 13 miles inland was completely different. Definitely dress warm and bring stuff you can ditch shortly into the race.

This was my second half marathon, and I really only did it for the medal 🙂
The race itself was nice–on the paseos in SCV, which are very well maintained, a pretty enough course, although there’s not too much change in scenery as you go along. It was also an out and back, so that part gets a bit monotonous. The mid-race hill/general elevation wasn’t so bad either. My only complaint, and theres really not much that can be changed here is that it was HOT! Its mid-valley and mid-summer, so you kind of just have to be prepared. Bring a TON of water.

The shirt and medal were awesome!
The aid stations were awesome!
The ice cream at the end was a great treat!

I’d do it again, if maybe they started a half hour earlier.
