As my 6th IMT event, I was nervous as they said there would be course changes due to construction. The race did start late this year, national anthem being sung at 8:10, and myself not crossing the start line til 8:20, but I chalk that up to the waved start due to the several thousand additional runners that registered from the Twin Cities. This course was flat, having (according to Strava) 106 feet of elevation gain through the entire half marathon. While Water works, and Gray’s lake were beautiful as always, the other areas (along Fleur Drive and heading into downtown) were a little hectic looking as they also had construction. There were plenty of aid stations, plenty of spectators along the course too. I love IMT and will do it every year I am able.

This race was by far the most scenic I have every seen. Starting in the “city”, it doesn’t stay there long. You quickly make your way onto a riverfront trail, several park areas, and even Rock island armory. The bridges are steep, but other than that, the course is flat. Do wish there were more aid stations, but still not too far without water or gatorade.

Swag is great, shirt and medal are beautiful. You also get small branded goodies. It is a point to point, and they shuttle you from designated parking spots (there are a few in town) to the start line, so plan accordingly.
Lots of people spectate, for the first half its more like a traditional race, but after you get to the Northside neighborhoods, people are partying on their front lawns the whole way downtown. Afterparty is fun too with lots of snacks and things to do! Two big hills at miles 5 and 11, but other than that its smooth sailing.

Fairly scenic course highlighting the best parts of Des Moines. Some hills on the first 10 miles then pretty flat after that. Lots of Aid, lots of spectators and cheering. Held the 3rd week of October, cool temps in the morning lead to perfect temps midday and afternoon.
