The communication leading up to the race was great. The organizers were easy to contact and quick to respond. The expo was limited on booths, but was well organized and I was in and out quickly (free, easy parking). Race morning, I used street parking a little over a half mile away from Forsyth Park and I felt safe walking to the start line. Bathrooms were plentiful but there were no garbage cans to toss our paper towels from the hand washing station.
Race host was motivating, as was seeing all of the Girls on the Run finishers walking to the corral. The only minus on the corral line up was that both the half and the 5k start simultaneously. It’s a lot of people packed in, but my main issue was that people waited until the last minute to get in, which pushed me about 10 people behind the 2:00 pacer (who got in closer to start time than I) when I was trying to aim for a 1:53, so it was a challenge once it was go time to get up where I needed to be.
Aid stations and water stations were plentiful, well stocked and volunteers were great. Course was good, a few areas were not well marked, but I was always following others so I just followed their lead. This was my first time doing this distance at this race, so I was just assuming they knew what they were doing (probably not a great idea, but it worked this time).
My only complaint about the course is there were a few stretches where there was no one and nothing to look at, and I was really disappointed that Greyson Stadium didn’t have more to it (there was a matching band in the stands, but y’all this is the home of the World Famous Savannah Bananas—-who were out of town for their World Tour—so I expected more.
The finish line was great. The free photos were awesome. Medal was great. Post-race snacks, drinks and free beer all great.
I can’t say much about the after party…I had travel baseball to get to. So I walked back to my car easily and with no issues.
The gift was a duffle bag. I know everyone loves these and they are glad it’s not another shirt. I don’t know, I guess I just don’t know how many duffle bags I really need. I have one from 2019…it’s cute and nice but I would have been fine with a quarter zip or something.
Overall, great experience. I didn’t PR but I did finish sub 2 and with the ease of getting to SAV and how smoothly it all went, I’ll definitely run it again.
