I have a family that doesn’t run, so this event gave them a holiday and me a chance to run guilt free.
I went to the race expo the day I landed on a Thursday. It was nice and quiet. There was a lot of stuff to buy and try.
The race itself is fairly flat. A few hills , but that isn’t what is going to get you. The heat and humidity are the tough bit. Don’t do what I did. I went into it pretty confident of a good time going out slow, with hopes for a faster second half. That was precisely the wrong strategy. By half way, the sun is up and the sunblock you have put on is making it really hard to sweat. This is a race where you need to cover as much ground as you can before sunrise. The race starts at 5:00 am, so you will get at least and hour and a half before it starts to get warm.
The race finish is well organised and the finisher shirt was great quality. Plenty of water, fruit and malasadas and space to sit down.
I will do this race again, but I will do a couple of things differently. I will go out harder than I did last time. When the sun is bearing down, I will slow down and take in more of the view. Second, I will wear runners designed for the summer running season instead of the winter version. A lot of people spray hoses in the second half to cool you down on the suburban back streets. Winter season running shoes don’t dry quickly like summer ones. I had the blisters to prove it.

I paced a first time runner in 2019, so I got to spend more time taking in the course in a way I had not done in previous years. The scenery is magnificent. If you look at the course map you may be inclined to think that because it follows the coast that it is flat. It isn’t. There are hills, though they are almost exclusively confined to the first half. Because the view is so good, you probably won’t realize until after the race how hilly the first bit was.
It is an early start. It will become apparent why two-thirds in. Maui gets warm so the race needs to start early to avoid the midday sun. You need a headlamp for the first part of the race. Buy a good one. There is a big difference in performance between a cheap one and a quality one, and you can leave it at an aid station to collect at the finish.
Race number pick up is easy, the swag is quality, the aid stations are community-based and enthusiastic and the race finish is well catered and attended.
I love this event. I have taken my family every year we have been able to travel, and I will continue to do so. It is well organized, well executed, and it supports the community. And it is staged in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Don’t think about it. Just sign up. You won’t regret it.

This is a really well organized race and for first time marathoners, it’s flat.
The first half of the race is run along a very scenic part of the Gold Coast. You will run beside the beach along a flat road for most of the way. You need to psych yourself up a little bit for the 30km mark because you will run past the finish line for the last leg. If you have family there, get them to meet you and pace you past that point.
The weather is temperate. No long sleeves required. No need to wear old clothes to the start line that you need to throw off as the gun goes, though plenty of people still do that.
Race swag in Australia is never as good as it is in the US. That is true for all Australian races. You will get a good medal and a finisher shirt and a bag with some free stuff, but the swag won’t be the highlight.
My advice, stay in Broadbeach. It’s near the expo and travel to the race start is easy on the tram.
