Over the many years I have ran this race, it just gets better and better. It shows there is a lot of work to make this a wonderful event. The OC marathon will be a race I run every year. Love the people and the running community that run year after year. Gary (RD), Rudy Novonty, Fitz Koehler, Kelsey, and all the other staff do an amazing job and always are having fun. I try to run any race close to me that has Rudy and Fitz announcing.

Race starts up (1400) for about 3.25 miles. Then rolling hills for the next 7 miles with great views. This part includes part of the “Trans Catalina Trail”, fun single track. Down for the next 4 miles which is great with lots of shade. A little stinger hill gets you over the reservoir, following by 5 more run-able miles. At about 19, you have the “Catalina Crush.” Personally, I don’t refer mile 19 as the “Catalina Crush”, its more like Catalina’s Zombie Hill. When you go up it, everyone looks like zombies going up it. Although its less than a mile, its a shocker. But is it not the last hill that hurts. After the “Crush”, you meet up with Airport Road for a mile or so. Then back on the “Trans Catalina trail” for that last real hill for the course. At this time, I typically say to myself, “I am done with the climbing.” But there is some more rolling hills to get over and you will tackle a fun single track down in Hermit Gulch. Reach Avalon Canyon road then you have approx 1.5 miles to the finish.

NOTE: Every year I do this race, my Garmin reads around 26.75 miles. Be aware of your pacing to your watch. Also has over 4000 of gain.

Spectrum Sports does an awesome job with this race. Very cool people, and if we are lucky we will have Rudy Novonty or Andrea Kooiman as race announcers.

Mike (RD) gives a pre race walk through the night before. One year someone asked if you have to worry about rattlesnakes. I thought to myself, you need to more worried about stepping in the Buffalo piles. Every year I do see Buffalo on the Eco, but not every year on the March Marathon. The March Marathon (Catalina Island Conservancy Marathon) has an easier course.
