It’s really hard to give a good review of a race during the pandemic days since everything is so scaled back. This race I think on a normal year would be a great, fun time. This year the marathon was a double loop which was kind of a bummer. The park out there is beautiful and we don’t got to see a portion of it. The course is pretty flat with some gentle up and down (hesitate to even call them hills). There wasn’t much of an after party, food or drinks this year. I understand, but still a let down seeing those tags for beer on your race bib…

Packet pick up was easy doing a little drive through thing. I’d recommend this race based on the other reviews, should be a lot more runner friendly on a normal year.

In 2020 it’s hard to really judge a race comparing it to the olden days. There weren’t bands, cheer sections, pre/post race parties or any of that.

It did have a RD that communicated well and put on a race in a time not many are happening. The course was well marked and had good aid stations. I heard some people mentioned there aren’t many aid stations. I ran sub4 time and it seemed fine. On a hot day or taking longer, I could see that complaint, but they did mention there would be less this year due to some communities not wanting aid stations in them because of Covid.

The course was scenic, along the water a while and in tree lined streets. It was hillier than what I thought it would be, my Garmin clocking just over 1000ft of elevation gain. It wasn’t closed to traffic but we had a coned area and it being a smaller race there wasn’t ever a lot of congestion after the first couple miles.

Post race there were pre-packaged snacks that hit the spot. No shirt this year. I suspect they didn’t want to order them and then have the state tell them they couldn’t have the race, and totally understand.

I would suspect that in a normal year this group would have great parties and atmosphere to round it out. If you need RI for your states or live in the area, give this race a shot. The Narragansett area is a great area with lots of fun shops and restaurants too.

I signed up for this race only a few weeks before it took place because the other race I was training for was canceled, along with every other one seemingly. They did a great race with the COVID protocols. Small groups on each bus and those groups used one area of an open field to wait in before the start. The wave starts worked well and moved everyone along quickly.

The course was nice. Gentle (really gentle mostly) uphill for the first 11ish miles. I really didn’t feel like I was going uphill from the start. Then the rest of the race was pretty much all downhill, with some pretty steep downhills where my pace really picked up. I ended up with a big PR even though I was not fully trained up. The downhill and tail wind we had this year were perfect for that.

This is a small race so don’t expect cheering crowds to motivate you. The aid stations were simple with water and HEED and gels every couple of miles.

Finish line was simple too with some light snacks and water/chocolate milk. I’m not sure if that is the normal fare, or pandemic related but it was enough for a small marathon.

All in all it was a really nice experience to check Montana off my list. Billings is a nice town with some good restaurants in the downtown area where I stayed.

This is a race that I will come back to in order to go for a BQ time. I went out gunning for a big PR and blew up, but the course lends itself to a fast time. No crowds to weave through and for the marathon, the course was marked well. I heard some of the other distances had some confusion. It is pretty much as flat as it can be but all on the greenbelt. The organization and communication could be better. I’m not sure if it was because it taken over this year by another org but the website info was a little lacking. There was no running through neighborhoods or the city. Putting the address to the start area and expo would be helpful for out of town runners.

Packet pick up was easy but swag/expo wasn’t much, just a long sleeve cotton blend shirt. The great thing about a small race was it was easy to wear the prerace warm clothes right up to the start time and drop them at the gear check. I got registered super early for a steal of a price so no real complaints here.
Post race, the medal was nice and food and drink were easily available.

Boise is a really nice city. Since I am going for all 50 states, I generally wouldn’t do a race twice, but this is one I will to come back to for a PR/BQ attempt.

One of the reasons I like marathons is they take me to fun places. We used this race as the kick off to a fun Alaskan vacation. The race itself was pretty good. I wish I would have listened to more people about the “tank road”. It was not a fun part of the course and it seemed to go on forever. Every step I took I slipped a little bit and it totally drained me. I wish I would have worn my trail shoes with a little more traction. The rest of the course was pretty nice though, some scenic trails and multi use paths with some shade on the latter part of the race. Handy when there is sunshine for 20+ hours
The logistics were pretty easy. The expo is a way out of downtown but I understand why they have it there for the kids run. It would be nice to have at a downtown location though if you were trying to get by without renting a car. The expo is small, I was in and out in about 10 minutes. I stayed at the Clarion right across the park from the morning shuttle and it is close to the finish line as well.
SWAG was pretty good, nice long sleeve tech shirt and a nice medal.

This was a real nice mid sized race at a good time of the year. The course is pretty flat except for a long uphill section from miles 11-12.5ish. Steady uphill there on a curvy road. Take the straightest path and you can pass a lot of people running the edge of the road. I wish you saw more of Churchill Downs during the run through it. I did see a horse practicing so that was neat. Good aid stations throughout helped. Crowds weren’t big, especially after the split off from the half marathoners but it’s not lonely. I set a big PR here and very happy.
I stayed at the Residence Inn right by the start/finish and it was great for logistics. Easy walk to the start and go. Not a lot of dining out there though but I walked to a spaghetti warehouse at lunch time and just heated it up in the kitchen in the hotel, saved my legs and beat crowds that way.

This is a really good small race in Maine. The town is inviting and there are a couple days worth of stuff to do. If you do this race get a hotel or house ASAP. The expo is very small. Be sure you don’t need to pick up and nutrition or anything else there because you likely won’t find it. You pick up your swag in Lubec and then the bib in Canada so you can get cleared by the border agents on both side. You could walk from the US to Canadian sites but a drive is much nicer. Take time to visit the Roosevelt Campobello Park when you are in Canada.
The race was easy to get from the school to marathon start and didn’t have any trouble finding a port-o-potty before. Walk down to the lighthouse and relax and warm up. Then get ready for hills. Lots and lots of them. Never really super long or super steep but every step was up or downhill it seemed.
The medal was unique as they are all hand made. Be sure you don’t hang it next to Little Rock though 😉
The swag was ok for what I normally keep from a race after throwing away all the paper ads. A poster (in a tube which was nice for traveling) a long sleeve tech shirt and a medal.
I would recommend this race if you don’t need a big crowd to get you going. And you can train for hills…
