This was my first marathon. I chose it because it advertised all downhill. Technically, it was downhill but the decline was so gradual it felt flat.

The last shuttle to the race start was for 4:45 a.m. Like a lot of other people, we were there a little early and took an earlier bus. But then had to wait 1.5 hours to race start! It is cold and dark at 5:00 a.m. The start line area had no lighting except for headlights pointing toward the event people setting up the area.

The race route was well marked. I ended up walking more than half the marathon, so at cut off time I was handed a piece of paper to follow to get to the finish line. I don’t read the listed type of directions well and almost got lost. A map would have been much better.

I was fortunate that the timing mat was still up when I hit the finish line. It was picked up after me and there were still several participants on the course. I know they have to pick it up at some point but I felt back for the remaining runners who worked so hard to finish.

This race was totally awesome. It is during the Iceland Cultural Celebration so there are many activities like free museum entries and hot spring visits. The race course is not difficult and is well marked. Iceland is very pretty and the weather was perfect.

Make a vacation of it. If you fly Icelandic Air you may go to Reyjavik for a week long layover on your way to somewhere else. It was our layover to Stavanger, Norway, where we did another race the following weekend.

Stavanger, Norway, was a wonderful race. The course routes through town and a part of it is on cobblestone (not too much, though). The scenery throughout the race was worth it. We stayed at a hotel that was walking distance to the race start. Race day had perfect weather. The race was well organized and marked. You don’t need to know how to speak Norwegian.

This is a perfect excuse for a vacation in Norway. The country is very beautiful and has a lot to offer. Not only did we do the race, we visited the Priekestolen a.k.a. Pulpit Rock. This is a rocky hike to a plateau with a 604 meter straight drop into the Lyseford. We also climbed the Flori 4444 stairs. Yes, there are 4444 stairs up the mountain that took us 2.5 hours and then a 3.5 hour hike down the mountain.
