Again I was in DC this weekend for the EOD Warrior Holiday Dash and wanted to see what races I could find on Saturday. I saw this was an afternoon race at 2:30pm also produced by Bishop’s Events and decided to do it. This race is really in the middle of nowhere about 1.5 hours outside DC. The race I did in Centreville was right en route to this race so while it was a lot of driving it worked out well logistically. There was no pre race email but the website was updated. This is part of a Wine series and took place on a vineyard. I don’t drink but vineyards typically mean farms which mean farm animals. Bishop’s Events are typically fine, small, friendly races and this was no exception though I find swag and production to be pretty average. The swag is better for a 5K than a half an includes a tech T-shirt and you got a free glass of wine which I declined. There was a 10K and 5K. the 10K started first and I think was two laps of the 5K. We gathered for pre race introduction and started. We were instructed to line up by pace. It is chip timed with a common start/finish. This was also a mostly cross country/non-technical trail race with a lot of it on grass. The description was less confusion than the other race this morning but still a bit confusing. You start by crossing the road and doing this out and back on a circular track thing then cross the road again and run past the farm buildings and through the vineyard and pass by some cows and horses. The track part was kind of odd and not scenic. It was on grass. The vineyard part was cool and very scenic with the animals and you also ran right through the vines. Course was mostly well marked though some sections were a bit confusing. There was a water station around mile 2. I think the course may have been a bit short as my GPS said 2.9 miles. I also may have accidentally cut a corner or skipped a short section as I said it wasn’t impeccably well marked. My finishing time was slow. The difficulty was the same as the morning race but I was 5 minutes slower even though this course was a bit short. I had a hard time with the afternoon start as I had eaten lunch and had some stomach cramps that made me have to walk. This race does have a medal at the end. The medal is fine. Bishop’s doesn’t have the best medals but any medal for a 5K is good to me. Overall I had a fun time with this event. It could have been a little better marked and I’d prefer more time in vineyards and less on the track area.
