The vibe, the culture and the alpine feel are what I have fallen in love with. The land and sky collide when I’m running down the mountain and all I can think of is “this is what I live for.” I have run this race only twice but am propelled and transformed each time. I find the experience immensely enriching. The course is 5 miles up and five miles down. A few miles of the course is on packed dirt roads in remote areas over mountains and farmland.
On a fun non race note, I usually stay in town for two days so I can wake up there race day and spend the night after the race so I can treat myself to good food and wine. One of my favorite parts is seeing all the racers the night before and night after the race. For lodging recommendations, and because I’m not that particular and very frugal about road race lodging, I would simply recommend the Commodores Inn. Beds are super comfy and the rooms are simple but clean. It’s quiet and perfect.
My last comment on the race itself is, this race gives new meaning to the word “hills”. I wouldn’t say “Hills” I would say “inclines.” You MUST do this race. When you finish it’s a true sense of accomplishment.
