The USAT-Sanctioned TRI for REAL Olympic-distance Triathlon was added to our TRI for FUN Sprint Triathlon Series in 2003. These races are held at Rancho Seco Park in Herald, California. The course has a 1.5 k swim – 40 k bike – 10 k run. Included for each athlete is custom tech-tee race shirt, a swim cap, athlete goody bag, hot post-race meal, and free athlete massage.
Swim – The race starts from the beach in with a 1.5 kilometer or .93 mile swim from the beach area. The swim course will be a triangular course in Rancho Seco Lake marked by the large white triangular buoys. Water temperature should be between 68 and 74 degrees. Wetsuits are allowed. The swim will exit the lake and head up the beach and on a grassy path to the transition area located in the parking area.
Bike – The 40k mile bike course is an out and back course. The first 2.5 miles are inside the park. The course will turn right onto Twin Cities Road (State Highway 104). The turn-around point is just before the City of Ione at the 12.4 mile mark (at Five Mile Road). Please be careful while on the road. Riders must stay to the right at all times! Riders must not draft other riders: You must maintain at least THREE bike lengths at all times behind the rider in front of you, and you MUST ride single file while on the Highway. Passing is allowed in a timely manner when it is safe to do so. After passing return to the right side of the road and continue to ride safely. Failure to do so will result in a drafting penalty or disqualification. Crossing the centerline at ANY time will also result in disqualification. Proceed to the turn around on Hwy 104 and return to the park. Traffic has the right-of-way on the road so ride CAREFULLY. The Bike course will Not have an aid station. Water and electrolyte beverage, along with energy gels will be available in the transition area.
Run – The run course begins directly outside the transition area and is a 10-kilometer or 6.2 mile out-and-back course on fire roads and trails within the park. There will be aid stations with cold water, FLUID electrolyte beverage and Clif Shot energy gels on the run course at run start, mile 1, 2, 3.5, and 5.2. ALL athletes must wear their race number on the front of their body during the run and have it when crossing the finish line.
