The 5 miler is the first 4.5 miles & last .5 miles of the half marathon course. I prefer the 5 miler as I do not like running on the gravel trail by the course. This year it was chilly at about 35 degrees at the start. The race started a few minutes late but they had water and Gatorade on the course and pizza, bananas, and oranges at the finish line. They ran out of small shirts so I ended up with X-small even with early pickup which was disappointing. No medals for the 5miler except for top 3 in each age division.

I was originally signed up to run 2015 race but it got rained out. The start was on time but there weren’t clear instructions on start regarding the new 5 miler starting after half. The first half of the race winds through neighborhoods, it seemed like at every block there was a new turn which made it very difficult to run good tangents and so most people ran longer than 13.1 miles. There was absolutely no one out in the neighborhoods cheering on runners and there were cars parked and garbage cans still out on the street. The second half of the race was an out and back along a crushed granite trail along the lake front. This made it extremely difficult for people to spectate since there was no access to the trail. I attempted to run with a pace group but the pacers were terrible and were about 5 minutes ahead half way when I finally let them go ahead of me. After the race, race results took two days to post online and no live tracking like bigger races provide. Race was advertised as flat, while there were no major climbs, the race was not pancake flat and had a ton of tiny hills especially on the trail portion. The hills were enough you noticed them going up but not enough that you got relief going downhill. Water stations were lacking and after race food was lackluster. You receive a tacky oversized medal; I prefer a normal size medal for my efforts. I wouldn’t recommend this race if you are looking for the experience, this is more about no glitz running.

I registered for this run months ago because it was a great price.
They had early packet pickup but I picked up race morning.
I ran the half marathon. A five mile run was also an option.
    Pre-Race- packet pickup was easy.
The packet consisted of a tech shirt, bib, and various adds.
Parking at the park or in areas outside the park was easy.
    plenty of restroom facilities.
Course – about half was on pavement thru nice neighborhoods and the other half was on a crushed granite trail. No hills. The trail portion was by the lake but the small crushed granite is horrible when if finds its way into your shoes. i picked up a larger rock at mile 12 and it drove me crazy for the last mile.1.
Great course markers, large and lots of them. Great volunteers. Lots of water/gatorade stations.
The half marathon finisher medal was pretty cool and large.
Finish area – I did not notice anywhere to get instant results and online it says not available till till the following day. I just like to check the results in case i had a top three finish in my age division (I dont want to stay an extra hour to find out if i placed, we left). Post race refreshments – fruit, cliff bar, oranges, and water.
There were a few vendors there some handing out snacks or other freebie items.
As runs go it was okay, would I run it again, probably not but only factoring the rocks in the shoes for nine miles (you run on the road first, then the trail, then the road, then back on the trail, then finish on the road), no instant results, and the hour and half each way from my home. But I do feel I got my monies worth for this event.
