Do you have what it takes? If so, then sign up for an old school race weekend at the annual Sunlight Showdown at Sunlight Mountain Resort. The event starts off with a 13 mile mountain bike race on Saturday and finishes with a 13 mile trail run on Sunday. Participate in one of the races or do both on back to back days to see if you have what it takes to complete the full Showdown! This is a race that focuses on self improvement and participation rather than podiums and egos (don’t worry freaks there are still prizes!)
Both races will be run on the same 13 mile course with 3000 ft in gain in reverse direction of each other. The races are run on 75% single track and 25% double track on Sunlight Mountain Resort and the Babbish Gulch trail system during the peak of wildflower season. You will wind through open meadows, pine and aspen forest, stream crossings and will be treated with the best view of Mt Sopris in the valley. Mountain bikers will start off with an 1900 ft climb of Sunlight and the runners will finish with the same decent.
13 miles for some of you vets may not sound like a lot on a bike, but this is not your millennial buffed out machine built berm on the turn flow course. This is an old school rugged cross country throw your bike on your shoulder kind of race. Fast descents, grinding uphills and amazing singletrack will have you coming back year after year to test yourself in The Sunlight Showdown.
There will be no aid stations for the mountain bike race.
For the run, challenge yourself with one of the toughest Half Marathons in the state. Whether you are training for a trail marathon or 50k and want to get some speed in or you are new to the distance, this course will not disappoint. Run for speed or run to finish, either way we would love to have you!
There is no cut off time for this race (if you sign up, there will be someone waiting for you at the finish line).
There will be one water only cupless aid station for the run at mile 8.6.
All proceeds benefit the Glenwood Springs High School Cross Country Team and trail improvements on and around Sunlight Mountain Resort.
