There is the Mayapple, the Febapple and now THE SQUATCHAPPLE!! Join us for the Squatchapple Trail Race at the South Mountain Reservation in West Orange, NJ! With distances for everyone, this trail party is open to runners and hikers of all ages and paces. Runners/hikers can sign up to squatch 11 miles, 20 miles, 33 miles or 50 miles! We will be supporting the South Mountain Conservancy with this trail party!
The start/finish area for ALL events is at the Tulip Springs Trailhead on Cherry Lane in West Orange. To any runners/hikers taking public transportation via the train, the closest train station is Millburn Station and is 3 mi drive or 2.7 mi trail run through the reservation. The earliest train arrives at 7:56am. For any NYC runners wanting to run the 50M, you can begin the 50M when you arrive at the race as it is chip-timed. Please note, there is a 12 hour cutoff so all runners must be off of the course by 8pm.
This trailhead has a large parking lot along with many picnic tables. Please feel free to setup your gear using a picnic table or leave gear in your car (just be aware that we cannot supervise your gear or be responsible for it). Our aid station and check-in area will be at the main covered pavilion next to the parking lot. There are portajohns here, as well as along the course.
The Squatchapple course consist of 3 different lollipop loops that all start/finish at the Tulip Springs Trailhead. The loops are 4 miles, 5.5 miles and 7 miles. Runners/hikers will complete a combination of these three loops to achieve the distances that they registered for. If you decide to drop down during the race to a smaller distance, please note that you cannot qualify for post-race awards.
4 Mile Turtleback Loop, PINK RIBBONS: 370 ft gain, 75% carriage roads, 25% singletrack.
5.5 Mile Locust Grove Loop, CHECKERED RIBBON. 600 ft gain. 75% carriage roads, 25% singletrack.
7 Mile Mayapple Loop BLUE RIBBONS: 815 ft gain. 95% singletrack, 5% grass field. Note: this loop has a road crossing – all runners/hikers must cross legally and only when they have the right-of-way at the crosswalk!
50 Miler: 5,355 ft gain – Pink, Checkered, Blue repeated 3 x’s
33 Miler: 3,570 ft gain – Pink, Checkered, Blue repeated 2 x’s
20 Miler: 2,155 ft gain – Pink, Checkered, Blue, Pink
11 Miler: 1,185 ft gain – Pink, Blue
All runners/hikers must be off of the course by 8PM.
– This is a very hiker-friendly event for most of the events
– A 11 hr 30 min cut-off for the 33M is a 20 min 50 sec /mile pace
– A 12 hour cut-off for the 50M is 14 min/mile pace. If you would like to start earlier for the 50M because you are worried about the cutoff, please reach out to us and we will make it happen!
To comply with local/state outdoor gathering limits, we will have each distance start in waves of no more than 50 people.
