The course itself is not super difficult, but there is no shade anywhere. You run out in the country in the middle of flat cornfields for two 13 mile loops. No scenery, unless you like corn fields. Temperatures almost reached 90 degrees on my race day, and with no shade for 26 miles, it got to be pretty brutal. Everyone around me either had to quit, or start walking cause the heat was too much. My pace drastically slowed down the last few miles. By the end of the race I felt like I was in the desert.

The production was good. They had water/gatorade stops every mile or so and bathrooms along the way as well. They did run out of water towards the end of the race which was rough, but probably what you expect on a 90 degree day. Got a medal and a shirt. And if it was an overcast or colder day it might not of been bad, but with no shade and no scenery I don’t think I’d ever do a full marathon there again, with the risk of it being that hot with no shade.

The Springfield marathon was held in a rural setting on account of COVID-19. Just outside of New Berlin, Illinois this race was a 2 loop course throughout corn and soybean fields. I loved being able to see as far as the eye could see among the flatland fields. The race director was very successful in making changes to his event to provide this race. If he can run a good race during a pandemic then he will be sure to please during normal types of years. This race course was very flat compared to The historic route in Springfield proper, so I am told. If the race is ever held again in New Berlin, the odds are set up to favor you for a BQ.

This was one of the most scenic runs I’ve been on. With Fall Colors changing, it was really nice to run to appreciate it. Don’t get me wrong, there was plenty of Road and gravel grind but the parts of nature made it well worth it. It was very high priced for what you got in swag. The medal was lame and screamed: I refuse to have any creativity. The post race was a 3 on a scale of 10. The Strenths was that it was Awesomely supported. Plenty of water stations (not enough porta potties) and the course had plenty of Rolling hills … gentle not anything too steep but by the last 10K, you didn’t want to see another hill.
