Known as one of the burliest venues on the Spartan Trail callendar, you can expect this rugged course situated in the foothills of the Northern Rockies to put your fitness and your mental fortitude to the test. Expect long, steep climbs, but know that you’ll be rewarded with epic views of Flathead Lake at the top. Weather can be a real factor here, so come prepared for anything! Oh, and make sure to keep an eye out for the local elk… and maybe even a grizzly bear!
TOP REASONS TO TAKE ON THIS COURSE:
1. Montana is called “Big Sky Country” for a reason. Here the sky goes for miles, and the views from the course give you a taste of America’s natural beauty at its finest.
2. Animals. Buffalo, elk, moose, and deer — you’re sure to see them all. If you’ve ever wanted to see some real wildlife, you’ll likely get a healthy dose while you visit and maybe even while you’re racing.
3. There are plenty of outdoor activities to partake in after the race. Check out Swan Lake, Echo Lake, or the Jewel Basin hiking area — just to name a few. Strawberry Lake is another gem, so come prepared as there may be snow.
4. Plan an extra day or two to Discover Kalispell, a mountain town rich in culture with four breweries, a winery, and shopping in a vibrant downtown, surrounded by an incredible outdoor playground.

Raced in the age group class which means no help with obstacles. New challenges this year at the added climbing portion of the Wall of Sparta. Obstacles became slippery with mud half way through the race which added to the difficulty of a half marathon. Legs cramps plagued us after the large, cold and chest deep water crossing, slowing our time considerably. This was my only race where obstacle failure meant almost 200 penalty burpees. The finish was absolutely rewarding!
