About the Race
During his inauguration speech, newly elected President George Washington committed to a tour of the United States so that he could better understand the culture of his states and the conditions of the communities, as well as give the citizens of the young republic a chance to meet their first President.
In 1791 he embarked on a journey of the southern states. He traveled to New Bern and lodged at Tryon Palace. He continued toward Wilmington on Kings Highway, which is now Highway 17. He stopped by a tree in Hampstead to have lunch a few miles from this very race site. He walked these roads on his way to Wilmington determined to help build a strong nation. Just like our first President, we are embarking on a journey—an Ultra Race for our community. Joining him over 200 years later, we continue the Southern Tour, but this time, it will be much more extreme.
With a beauty unparalleled, this unmanaged coastal wilderness includes a labyrinth of trees and winding paths that take you from the historical soil where President Washington stood to the wind-swept coastal plains. You run in a tunnel of vines and dense forest and open into a sand-laden marshland with amazing views. One with nature, you may encounter osprey flying overhead or even deer on the trails—all part of the Ultra-experience. The blue and orange skies of the coastal Carolinas beckon you to keep going! It is an Ultra and despite the conditions, you cannot give up!
Join us in presenting this unique event to our community and to the Ultra race community.

The atmosphere of this race is pure fun. Many of the racers actually camp in the open field near the trails, so there is a bon fire, music, breweries pouring samples onsite, lots of kids and dogs. I ran the 50K but had friends running the relay so we teamed up to run loops together which was fun and it was nice to sit down and change my shoes or eat a snack if I wanted between loops. Local race with good organization, well-marked trail and overall fun weekend!
