Where has the run gone? Well, down the coast just a bit. Instead of the recent Bolsa Chica location this time it was at Beach and PCH. Overall I liked Bolsa Chica better as it seemed more secluded and had a beach bar nearby! (Remember – this used to be the Rum Run!). Caren Ware and her family put on fun, themed events that are economical and great for runners of all ages and this was no exception:-)
It’s was great to see so many in the pirate spirit! Her vendors get better and better.
Only complaint this year is the course seemed to be off on this distance. It seems a the last moment they moved some things around so the 10k peeps didn’t have to do a complete double loop of the 5k but somehow the 5k ended up being something like 3.4 miles.
I am coming off a knee injury (look, ma! No cartilage!) and I stopped running once my GPS said I made 3.1 miles and then walked through the finish a great distance later.
Regardless, highly recommend! Also – if you do their whole series the 4 medals you get fit together like a puzzle cool, maties!

Hey Daniel – so happy to hear you're back running and always appreciate your excellent reviews. Love the start line pic, but no shot of you in pirate costume?! :)

My family and I were in So Cal on vacation, and my daughter-in-law and I decided to run the 5k. Anytime you can get out and run a relatively flat course that has a view of the Pacific Ocean, I think it’s worth it.

I do not run a lot of 5k and 10k races, but the pirate theme sparked my interest. I love dressing up. The event offers free race morning packet pick-up, which always makes me happy. The event shirt had a cool pirate design, but was unisex and ran large. The course was an easy (but dull) out-and-back along the Huntington Beach bike path. It became rather congested as we approached the 5k turnaround point. My friend and I are “middle of the pack runners” and ran the 10K. The post-race refreshments included water and fruit. When my friend and I finished, there were only 3 pieces of banana left. Lame, since there were still plenty of runners behind us. Luckily Noosa yoghurt sponsored a tent at the race and they still had plenty of their yoghurt to give out. The medal was a puzzle piece which is designed to fit with the Cinco de Mayo Run and Tiki Run medals. If you collect all 3 medals, you will receive a 4th puzzle piece to complete the image (spoiler alert, it is a shark). I did not run the Cinco de Mayo race and am not interested in spending the money to run it as a virtual race just to get the medal. I think the connecting puzzle piece medals are a really cool idea, but would have preferred a non-puzzle piece pirate medal since I am not planning on completing the set. The website said that in addition to age division awards, random people would win bottles of rum. As far as I know, there was no rum. They accidentally gave the raffle prizes to the children’s games, but I doubt that is where the rum went. As far as I know, there was no official event photographer. Overall, the event was cute but I probably won’t run it again… unless they have a really cool medal next year.

SoCal Pirates Run 5k is organized by Caren Ware, who is a National Champion and world class athlete, a USA Track & Field Level II Coach. The race itself can be a real race, or fun race depending on how you want to do it. The race is 5k, and chip timed, and you get all the things that come with a real race, which is age group awards, time/pace at the end of the race, and your time doesnt start until you cross the start line ( so ignore the crowd etc). ITs also a fun activity for familis, as its at the beach, and everyone is encouraged to wear costumes. ITs at Bolsa CHica Beach, so if you live close by it could be a family/fun activity.

Unlike most races, this is on a Saturday which I absolutely love, Most races are on sunday, which means you have to spend entire saturday worrying about the race day, but this one can be super casual! The medals were beautiful! and this particular race, I saw lot of kids run the race, and a 3 year old got a medal for his under 6 age group – the most adorable thing! and every one gets a finisher medal, which I am all in support of! that is how every race should be!

It costs about 35$s, but you can look up discount codes, and also sign up old school skipping internet, and save money on processing fee.

Being an Athelete, I think Caren has the most relaxing policy with bib pickups. You can pick up on the day of the race (yay!), and if you pick up the day before you can pick up for others in your party with little proof(Yay again!). The tshirts we got were cute, and so were the beverage cozy!.

All in all, its a fun easy race, and if you are doing serious races, take a time off and do it, and its such a nice little break – everything you want in a race + fun!(No beer tho, being state beach and no alcohol policy.. !)
