this was my first 5k in 1992. I was so nervous…drove up from Cypress, CA. I had no idea what to expect or to do. Turned out I really like running with other people and having food at the end and getting a shirt (this was 10 years before “everyone” got a medal. I was hooked. Haven’t stopped since. It felt the same. Same course, same views…Except this time I didn’t take a walk break at mile 2, afraid I wasn’t really running 3 miles every day (no gps watches, just the odometer in my car when I drove my routes to measure them). I couldn’t bear the thought back then that I might bonk and have to walk to the finish!
This time I ran fast and didn’t stop and got an AG medal. 25 years older, not my fastest time but it was wonderful to go back to the beginning. I still have my shirt, though it is thin from all the washing. It is in a sealed bag now. I hope I have another 25 years of running.
