It was tough to judge the race. It was relatively inexpensive for what you got (race expo with live music after the race, okayish food: rice, pasta salad, yoghurt; tshirt and medal and finisher bag with some give away a like a box of milk and dental care products from the main sponsor Forhans) but darn I didn’t like the course and the race. Maybe me being tired and the warm temperatures added to my disliking. Expo, start and finish is at the Ponte della musica. The course has several loops and Tiber crossings but manages to stay away from ALL of the sights (so you can fully focus on running). There were literally 3times a group of 5 people on the course cheering. That’s it. The streets were partially really dark and cracked up. A lot of the street lights were broken and the signal lights from the police cars blocking some of the streets were irritating in the darkness. Speaking about blocked streets. In some parts of the first section, auto scooters and the tram/ bus were co-using the roads. Often we ran by garbage bins on the streets- with day temperatures 100+ degrees my stomach didn’t take that smell well. On the pro side: the race had various pacers for those who need to run with them.
I have done night races in the past and it is a different challenge. I never say never but I don’t see myself running RomaByNight again unless there are improvements to the course. Btw: for back-to-back runners: in the last three years it was an option to run Roma By Night on Friday and Grawe Nocni in Zagreb/ Croatia on Saturday night.
