Paine Mountain Trail Race

Directly east of Northfield Vermont, lies a hidden gem of rolling single track, winding forest roads, and abandoned ski slopes on the flanks of Paine Mountain. With steep climbs and descents and incredible views, this series of forested trails make for some of the best trail running in Central VT!

All Paine Mountain Trail Races start and finish at Norwich University’s Shaw Outdoor Center, and the courses take advantage of both the Shaw Center’s extensive mountain bike network and the Northfield Town Forest.

Both the Heavy Half Marathon and the 10K traverse the slopes of Paine Mountain on single track, old roads, and ski slopes that have been developed into multi use trails. Both races will be run partially on trails managed and meticulously maintained by the Norwich University Shaw Outdoor Center, and partially on single track trails in the Town of Northfield Municipal Forest.

The Northfield Conservation Commission has been working with the town to purchase the summit of Paine Mountain. This race is a celebration of their efforts to maintain public access to Paine Mountain, and the trails that lead us there.
