This is the second time I have run this half marathon, and I just love it! It is challenging in that there are some minor hills, but the scenery is so fantastic, that you forget about the difficult parts! Aid stations were manned by happy welcoming people, and there were medical support staff running in the race, so they could stop and help fellow runners if there were issues. This is the first time I have ever seen medical support like this. The medals are big and heavy and the post-race refreshmentswere plentiful! The band playing after was fantastic, and even though I was tired, I danced for quite a long time! I would definitely recommend this half marathon.

I have run this race for over 10 years in a row, so I get some of the Legacy Perks. I love the course…challenging, yet rewarding, you will be concentrating on the scenery and not the pain. Great Post race refreshments and entertainment. I love that it starts early so you finish early and have the rest of the day to spend at the beach or having a Sunday Funday.

This was my second year running the OC Half Marathon and I continue to enjoy this race. The course is relatively easy with only a few gentle uphill portions (although at mile 10/11, you feel it a bit). There was an over-abundance of aid stations and energetic supporters. Although I got a PR, I left the race thinking/ wishing I could have pushed myself even more. Next year, I will definitely look at this review and remind myself of that fact.

Being a first-timer for any marathon and running on my own, I was really anxious about what to expect, what I needed to provide on my own, or prepare for. Come race day, there weren’t really any questions to ask. Everything is so well planned that it leaves no room for questions. Parking, drop-off, shuttle information and more was very thoroughly provided in your bib packet. Water stations were well placed. Just as I was dying, the energy and snack stations appeared. The medical assists and pacers that run through the race are extremely appreciated as well.
We ran by the beach, through the bay back nature reserve, through and through beautiful neighborhoods. The terrain was slightly hilly, but none of the hills were incredibly steep or insurmountable. Fairly easy hills in my opinion. There are police officers and guides and cheering crowds throughout the course. Let’s not forget to mention being in SoCal Newport, the weather was perfect. You’re not freezing your behind off at 5:30AM nor melting completely by the end of the race other than from your own body heat, but that’s inevitable.
At the end of the race, gatorade and water and snacks were immediately handed out to the runners. There was a whole area available for stretching and rolling out your muscles. Sage essential oils was onsite to help relieve some pain along with complimentary massages!
Overall, it was a really great experience. I wasn’t sure if I was going to do it again, but everything was so well planned out that I’m already eager for next year’s race and to have a new personal best time.

    Thanks OC Marathon.

This was my 6th time running the race and as always it was a beautiful course. They have changed it very slightly over the years so that you enter the fair grounds in more of a straight shot, but that adds a little extra wrinkle at fashion island to make up the distance. There are a couple climbs, but mostly flat-ish with some slight rolls. All in all, a really beautiful and not that difficult course.
Probably my biggest complaint is common with most larger races: the lack of organization regarding the corrals that results in things being too crowded at the start. Additionally, this year I was placed into corral 5 for some reason (despite saying my time would be around 1:50 and registering months in advance). After seeing that corral 5 was the very last corral (way away from the pacers running my speed) I had to work my way up to the correct corral. That was quite a bit of work and meant I was at the end of the gigantic corral 1. The first mile was spent trying to get through large crowds who should have started in later corrals.

As with many races, they should either properly enforce corrals, and / or have more corrals of smaller sizes so that things aren’t so crowded at the start.

Ok – now that I’m done complaining, the views were great running atop of Back Bay and through Corona Del Mar. Definitely my favorite course of the Beach Cities Challenge courses.

This was my first time running the OC HM. I love the race. The expo was great. I loved the convenience of parking for free at the start line. The course was beautiful. It was bit hot so having many water stations was a life saver. The finish line was incredible with so much support. We normally drink our beer and head home. This was the first time we stayed around to enjoy the band and took advantage of the free envy massage!

Would recommend this race. Special gift for Legacy Runners (3 years+). I’m thankful they provided bags at the finish line for our refreshments. I would have appreciated it a lot more if the bottled water and Gatorade was cold. Complimentary massage from Massage Envy at the finish line festival.
I waited for a friend to finish the full so we can enjoy pizza together in the Hoka Lounge. Unfortunately they ran out by the time he finished the race 🙁
The Saje area for relaxing and stretching out was a nice touch to the festival.

I like this race now that I am doing the full rather than the half. I have done the half about 7 or 8 times and the full twice now. I got behind the sweeper and then stopped and talked with people out on Sunday in their yards along the route. I did not train for a full marathon but will next year when I get a PR in the full marathon.

Most importantly the course is fun and a bit challenging with rolling hills in the last few miles. I enjoyed the variety of scenery, especially running along the Newport’s Backbay. This event has a “Super” post race expo “Party”. I really likes that split finish lines for the half marathoners and full marathoners. You race 26.2 miles, you get a band welcoming you to the finish…Nice! Free massages were a nice touch…if you feel like waiting for 30-45 minutes. Production was was just right. Announcers worked hard to entertain (pre-race) and motivate you thru the finish. OC fairground is a nice venue. You’ll pay an additional $16-$18 for parking…Drag! But if you sign-up early it won’t feel like such an imposition. This course is worthy of racing a couple times. I’ve completed all races in the Beach cities challenge and I would rate The OC Marathon: #1 for post race activity, #1 for course (challenging and beautiful) and #2 for production (Long Beach Marathon is #1 in my book).

Last year I PR in this race at 1:53, this year I got my second best race time ever! Yippee!! The scenery is great on the half marathon course. We ran by the water in Corona Del Mar, by the wilderness preserves in Newport Beach, even the neighborhoods have things to look at along the way. I love that it’s a point to point, so there’s always something new to see. I really dislike backtracking during a race. This year, it felt like the crowd support got upped a notch. There were neighbors out cheering and supporting runners with water and food, spectators cheering runners along and lots of aid stations! I didn’t even have to carry water with me along the way. It was such a positive experience and I was surrounded by the positive energy the whole race. The other runners were awesome too! The course has just enough hills to make it interesting, but not a crushing challenge. These are the reasons I’ve come to run this race from SD three times. The goodies at the end were awesome this year too! Lots of food and drink and even essential oils! The medal is nice and big too. It was a great event! I’m hoping to make my 4th appearance on this course next year too. Good job OC Marathon!
