Whether you are looking for your first ultra race or a season veteran wanting something a little different, the Not-A-Sprint 3, 6, 12 Endurance Run is the one for you. The entire race takes place on the Thermal Belt Trail (Greenway) between Forest City and Spindale, North Carolina.
The race will be a 4.5 mile out and back course beginning at POPS and following the Thermal Belt Rail Trail North to Mill Town Brewing Company in Spindale, and then back to POPS. There will be one aid station at Mill Town Brewing, and one self-serve aid/H2O station in the middle of the course.
There is a measly 95 feet of elevation over the entire course and it is paved the entire way. There will be few road crossings. Volunteers will be on hand to direct runners where necessary, but runners need to be aware of their surroundings at these intersections.
The course is partially to completely shaded on about 35% of the course which should help significantly with September temperatures!
The first runners will leave the Pavilion on Park Square (POPS) at 6am. The first wave will run 12 hours from 6am to 6pm. The second wave will run 6 hours from 6:30am to 12:30am. The third wave will run 3 hours from 7am to 10am.
There will be food, water and electrolytes available at every aid station, and various food choices throughout the day. Runners should also plan on bringing their own supplies to set up near the start/finish. Space will be provided for tables, chairs and tents for runners and their crew. There will be porta potties or public restrooms at miles 0, 4.5, 9, 13.5 and so on.
Half laps will be counted since there will be timing mats at both ends! Throwing Bones is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to encourage cancer patients to stay healthy and active through treatment. Throwing Bones’ programs include the Cancer Active Assessment series, Cancer Active Education, and the Cancer Active Coaching Network.
All funds raised through the Not-A-Sprint Weekend will be used to encourage those affected by cancers to stay healthy and active through treatment, and to support the Kirk Wilkerson Cancer Heroes memorial contribution to East High School Athletics, where local Forest City cancer hero, Kirk Wilkerson coached the East High School Football team and changed lives.
