I ran this race in 2012. The new course is better. Less congested. Beautiful scenery. Miles 11 to 17 were tough (rolling hills with some fairly steep downhill stretches). Prep your legs with lots of downhill training runs and strength training! Course aid stations were a little sparse. And never enough port-potties for desperate runners!! This was a major issue. When aid stations are spaced further apart then the race MUST provide like 6 or 7 porta-potties at each aid station. Not just 2! No runner wants to wait in line when they’re trying to achieve a BQ or PR. The last few miles through downtown Ventura are busy with traffic running parallel to the runners. Street is quite pitted and pot-holed.

This was my first time running Mountains 2 Beach (but my 28th half marathon).  If I had to sum up my experience in one word I’d say:  underwhelmed.

Don’t get me wrong, the race is very well done. Nicely organized.  No real complaints.  But, as far as the half goes, it isn’t scenic. Not really. There are about 2 miles of bike trail that are nice.  There’s also a lot of industrial views, chain link fence and pothole-ridden Ventura Ave (out and back) — that street is awful, I mean downright dangerous how torn up it is.  I know that isn’t the race’s fault but they do choose the streets it runs on.

Apparently, they changed the start area of the Half this year so it doesn’t go up as high as it used to.   It never went all the way to Ojai like the marathon course but sounds like they took a lot of the downhill fun out of it.

Overall, I’d call this “High School to Beach” cause there’s nothing Mountains about it.  Boo.  Again, no real complaints about the race.  It was just kinda ‘meh.’

The start line shuttle info seems daunting and confusing but is not at all on race morning. The first 2/3 of the course and the finish is stunningly beautiful! I had no idea that the loop around Ojai was though orange orchards. I’d never been that close to an orange tree before. I also loved the canyon section of the run. It was very picturesque. I didn’t love the section coming into Ventura. It was a long straight endless looking road that came t the part when I was beginning to fade. It is what it is!! Great Race! Loved cheering for other runners in the beer garden that was along the final home stretch! Volunteers were fantastic!

Nice race t-shirts. This year – it was a lot easier to pick up BIB, too. The weather has always been GREAT. Nice and cool. Perfect run weather.

This year the weather was good for racing (low 60s, some drizzle), not so good for hanging at the beach. But I know the area and it can be warm and sunny!
Lots of stations to hydrate (only two with gels) Would love to see the aid stations set up to refill bottles and packs with water or Fluid !! Coming thru at an 8:30 pace, they were only ready with the cups – which is fine for many, but I plow thru 2-3 liters in 3.5 hrs (cups can’t handle that). Want to refill my 20 oz bottle quickly please. I surprised the volunteers with my need.

A few years ago I ran the marathon, and this year I completed the half marathon distance. While the half marathon course itself is FAST – the scenery will not motivate you at all. For the first few miles, you are running up a bike path by wire fences with an oil refinery on your right, and after you make the the turn to go back to town, you are running past run-down strip malls and gas stations. The road is quite uneven at this point and you need to watch your footing. Run towards the center line – it seemed flatter there. The last mile along the beach is the best part of the run. If you you choose this event, the MARATHON is the way to go. You’ll enjoy the scenery of the mountains and shade of the trees as you run down the bike path.

The event itself is VERY well organized. The pick-up day was quick and there were a variety of vendors at the expo in case you needed more fuel, a new race belt, or extra socks. The aid stations were well stocked and the high school cross-country team volunteers were helping in handing out water, nutrition, and sports drink. There isn’t much cheering along the race, however there were a few spots where teams of people were out there.

Overall, I love this race, but will only return if I’m doing the marathon.

Two things I was disappointed in however were the limited restrooms along the way and people at the water table not even knowing when the next one is (i know I should have mentally remembered what mile markers they were at but it would have helped if someone could have told me so I am partly to blame) and secondly the corral setup; when I originally signed up only the last corral was available several weeks before the race I asked about this and they said to talk to the people at the expo who could help me out. The expo told me they were not being strict about the corrals and I could just move up to the second one (even though my bib color did not match). On race day I tried to start in the second corral but got yelled at and told me that I needed to wait for my colored group even after I told them I was trying to pace with 3:33. This definitely threw off my plan and made it hard to keep an even pace so I either wish the expo just told me I couldn’t so I at least would be mentally prepared with the splits needed or that the people at the start were on the same page. Besides those two negatives the race course overall is really fast and the weather was definitely ideal for running a PR. The medals were really awesome too! Loved the design this year.

I was the 2:20 pacer for the M2B half and am a legacy runner of this race so my opinion may be a little biased but I have seen this race grow in size and quality. The start area for the half was the best of the 6 years of the race’s history, more room for the racers to spread out. There were more porta-potties so lines were never long. I think the different start waves could have been signed better, or more announcements to let the runners know what to do. The water stops were plenty and well staffed – the volunteers were great. Running on Ventura Avenue was good that it was wider than the bike path but it was also bad as the road was full of cracks and potholes. Also maybe a few signs on cones to let the runners know that the center portion of the road was open to vehicle traffic and that the runners should stay clear or be careful. The signs on Santa Clara said that half marathon runners stay to the left and 5k to the right. It should have stated half and full marathon runners to the left – I saw some of the marathon runners who were closer to 6 hours were confused as to where to run. The area immediately past the finish line was very crowded, the runners didn’t have much room to stretch out once they finished. The medical tent and food area could have been pushed back a little more, or not allow people to go from one side of the finish chute to the other right after the finish line. Overall I thought the half marathon race/course/expo was better than previous years.

To be honest Mountains 2 Beach is the only half marathon I’ve ran so I can’t compare it to other races, but this is my second year running and I think they did a great job improving upon the course from last year. I missed the quaintness of running the bike path but having more room to move through the crowd made it worth it. The cheering crowds along the route were awesome and gave me a push when I needed it most. There were plenty of aid stations along the way. The swag was not as great as last year, the shirt was nice but no bag/goodies. The metals were really nice with a rotating center that changed from mountains to beach. The expo was held at the fairgrounds so I expected bigger would be better but I was in and out in about 10 minutes. Packet pickup and race shuttles were smooth and well organized. After party was also really fun, especially the massage tables 🙂 The one suggestion I have for next year would be a better way to move crowds across the running path to the parking area. Spectators (including surfers with boards) had to time it just right to cross the path which was not fair to the runners and caused a lot of angry yelling. Overall I would highly recommend Mountains 2 Beach, you can’t beat the location and the supportive, cheering crowds!

The expo wasn’t spectacular, but it met my expectations. There was plenty of parking, and I got my bib within a minute, and I got my shirt two minutes later. I could have been in and out in all of five minutes, including parking time. I really like the shirt. I can see myself wearing it a lot. There were a few vendors, so we walked around a little.

I stayed at a hotel in Ojai, so I can’t say anything about the buses or the length of the wait for the start. I didn’t use the porti-potties at the start, but the wait looked pretty long. The weather was perfect and the race started on-time.

There were hills, starting with an increase in elevation for the first three miles, but overall, I thought the course was fast. There was a change in the course from last year adding a hill at mile 24. I’m not a fan of that change.

I was so wiped out that I didn’t get a chance to enjoy the after party, but it looked like everyone was having a great time.

Overall, I thought this marathon was well organized, and I wouldn’t hesitate to race it again.

This is a great course to set a PR and punch your ticket to Boston because there are long downhill sections, but there are some challenging sections too, and you do have to manage effort or suffer the consequences over the final 6-8 miles. Along the way you’ll enjoy some breathtaking views. There was plenty of crowd support, frequent aid stations (about every 1.5 miles), a great looking medal. I would definitely do this race again.

This is a nice small race with a fast point-to-point course. The weather has been really nice on race day so far. Starts in the cute town of Ojai and ends at the Ventura pier. They changed the course in 2016 and it’s tougher than the last time I ran this course in 2013. Save a little in the tank for that slight incline at mile 24-25, feels like a mountain on tired legs. I’ve ran this race 4 times now and it is still one of my favorite.
