I spectated this race in 2016 and signed up for the 2017 race on site. The medals were amazing (functional for wine lovers!), and you get a comemorative wine glass upon finishing, with tents for trying local wine and beer, plus so many people around (not in a super-crowded way) and nearby restaurants celebrating. Great community event.
I live near the course and train on it often, both because it’s beautiful and challenging. The race itself felt pretty accessible as far as the expo, starting line situation, etc. It was very easy to jog to the start from home (though there are large lots and a deck for parking) and immediately find where to check my gear back. Gear check for dry clothes after the race was close to the finish line and also very easy to access. Really no reason NOT to do this race!
I felt like I was in shape to run close to my PR on a comparable course, but was two minutes slower than PR, which I largely attribute to course difficultly. The middle uphills miles were tough!

I have run the Livermore Half every year since the inaugural year, earning a legacy status this year. It is well organized and offers one of the best medals around. Usually the medals have been aesthetically nice as well as functional (coasters, wine charm, bottle stopper). The wine festival afterwards is amazing and offers things for the whole family to enjoy. There are also plenty of vendor booths that offer free swag both at the expo and the finish. Suggestions for future races would be more Port o potties spread out at the start area, gender specific shirts, and separated wave corrals based on finish time. Livermore Half is one of my favorite races that I’m happy to run and repeat again each year.

Overall I have enjoyed this race for the last four years. This year felt a bit less organized than the previous three. I was a bit disappointed in the change in day and time (I liked Saturday at 8:00). I was really disappointed in the men’s shirt that I am unable to wear. I love the course and enjoy the festival afterward. The course is beautiful, and the festival is enjoyable after the race. The medal has been great each year. The T-shirts have changed drastically each year. Out of the four years I’ve run the race, I have one shirt that I love, and 3 that I can’t wear. This year was men’s t-shirts only, and the small is too large. There were no x-smalls. Overall it’s a good race, but I would like to see improvements made so that I can truly enjoy the memorabilia from this race.

    Make no mistake about it.
    I do like this race.
Keep in mind, I’m running all of Livermore anyway. 🙂
    Every. Street.

Race started an hour early this year, at 7am.
Understandably, I was very happy about this.
Now for some bullets on the race.
Scenery is very beautiful in some parts—wineries, etc.

Lots of friendly supporters on the course.
I live very close to the start, so I walked over.
Very cool to have pacers out there helping.
Extra porta potties at the start would’ve been nice.
Race expo is the only place to get bib and shirt (day before).
Might I suggest expanding that a little.
One other thing, is that the shirts were unisex only (which means Male).
Running this race is still very fun.
Expect to see me there again.

What I liked – the scenery when we were running on the paved trails: the hills and vineyards. I normally run on trails, so I also really liked that there was a dirt strip next to the paved trail. I liked the stuffed mountain lion on display around Mile 6. That was a nice surprise. And I liked the medal that works as a wine bottle stopper and bottle opener, and the wine glass. Banana and chocolate milk at finish hit the spot. Volunteers were great.

What needs to be improved – more porta potties!!! The lines for the porta potties at the start were so long. I had to start a few minutes later than 7 because I was waiting in line. And yes, I got to the race early. When I got to the second aid station, the line was 20 deep. I was there for at least 12-15 minutes! Fortunately, I wasn’t trying to PR. I also ordered a women’s small shirt. But the shirts were unisex and they gave me a medium. ?And where was the wine? Nowhere near the wine glasses. Didn’t have the time to look for it.

I paid full price for this race because this was a last-minute decision. But with all the choices we have, I would think this race should have provided a better value. This is probably a one and done for me.

I ran this as part of the Golden State Half Series, and while I’ve run a marathon before, this was my first half marathon.

The expo was small and didn’t seem to have many running-related tables — there were only about two booths selling tshirts and jewelry; the others were for local businesses or organizations. As others have pointed out, shirts were only available in unisex sizes, which was disappointing. The race itself was excellent — the course winds through a park (“mountain lion territory”) and past vineyards, and you definitely get some solid hills. Volunteers and spectators along the course were great. The aid stations seemed well prepared for all runners, other than a shortage of restrooms (luckily not a problem for me, but I saw several lines). I did see a woman running with a dog on a leash — if I remember correctly, dogs weren’t allowed on the course and it was a safety concern for myself and other runners I spoke to. The medal doubles as a wine bottle stopper and is pretty hefty! I’d definitely run the race again, with the hopes that organizers enforce the rules and maybe up their swag game a bit.

Pros – Scenery, the medal, the volunteers on course

    Cons – Expo, shirts

The course was challenging from 7 – 9 miles which I expected. But after 12 weeks of training hard and finishing 3rd in my age group, I was disappointed to find out there were NO age group awards. Given the high entry fee, one would think they could afford age group awards. No big awards ceremony is needed, just a few tables where runners could go to pick up age group awards similar to what Brazen Racing does.

-great, mostly flat course with beautiful hill views and vineyards
-well organized and plenty of water stops
-perfect crowd size made me not have to waste time dodging other runners on the course
    -wine tasting at the end

    Cons:
-they dont mail reg packets, you have to pickup day before which is a super pain especially if you dont live close
-brag about great shirts but theyre all mens sizing… I’ll never wear it sadly cause its way too big. Is it too much to do womens and mens!?! Especially if you brag that the shirts are great.
-lack of bathrooms before start. HELLO!!!! Everyone knows everyone goes before the race. This is a rookie mistake that can easily be fixed. I wasted prob 20 mins in line… then ran into mens room and barely started race on time.

    Pros:
    – Small race, so packet pick up was super fast and easy (but see my “con” about packet pick up as well)
    – The pacing team was amazing – so much energy and really encouraging
    – The wine and beer festival at the end! All runners got unlimited tasting.

    Just okay:
    – Scenery was alright – maybe I’ve gotten spoiled from living in CA with all of these beautiful races, but just seeing the green hills in the wineries got old pretty fast

    Cons:
    – The site stated that every runner had to pick up their own packet the day before, and if you wanted race day packet pickup, you had to pay extra ($35) for this… so I made the 1.5 hour round trip drive the day before to get mine, only to see that they would allow others to pick yours up.
    – Not enough port-o-potties at the beginning! All of the reviews from past years mentioned this, so you think they would do something to change it, but the line was still ridiculous… I got there 30 minutes before the start, but I knew there was no way I’d make it through the line by then so I just went behind some cars
    – The festival at the end should offer more beer. I understand that Livermore is mainly wine country, who craves wine after a race? It’s always beer. I noticed that the few beer tents had much longer lines than the wine ones.

This is an amazing race because of the scenery, course and small town atmosphere. Someone said it was flat…it isn’t! There are gentle rolling hills until about mile 8 or so. Then a few tough ones that eventually flatten out for the home stretch. The swag is good with the exception of the unisex shirts this year. I was not happy about that I was led to believe I was ordering a women’s large shirt and then get a unisex men’s. Which by the way I had to ask to have mailed to me. Past years have had men and women’s shirts which make a huge difference. It was nice that the wine area wasn’t completely enclosed which made for easy maneuvering. Liked the early start, the goodies at the finish line and the race overall. Also, glad they changed the course a bit, awesome support. Big thanks to all the volunteers. See you next year!

From downtown street to parks and county lanes next to vineyards, this run has a beautiful course. I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of wine (2 per winery from about 10) and there was beer too (they were pouring basically full glasses). You quickly get over the fact your drinking immediately after running and it’s only 10 in the morning! And then you are still in the nice Livermore downtown to enjoy lunch. I certainly haven’t run them all, but this one has to rank up there. I LOVE this course, not only for its scenery, but also for its hill work in Miles 7-9 that is difficult enough to make it interesting, but not so difficult as to scare off a PR. The post-race festival with wine- and beer-tasting and the live band rocks. Great bling and great runner support. I could not have PR’d without the help of the awesome 1:35 pacer from the Tri-Valley Running Club. I wish I knew that guy’s name. He was a perfect pacer through the uphill and downhill portions, and then pushed us out of the nest like little ducklings and sent us chasing after our best times.

Another flat and fast course with great race production and swag. This race is held in March, which is a perfect time to miss the extremely hot conditions of Livermore in the Tri Valley area. Serious medal with vineyard theme and plenty of unlimited free beer or wine at the finish line. Another positive is the very close free parking in the shopping center parking lot adjacent to the start and finish line (if you get there early enough). This race is also one of the three stops on the Golden State Half Series Challenge, with a very serious bling of a finisher medal of it’s own, once you complete that series. My valuable tip is that you don’t need to upgrade to the VIP pkg. on this race either, since the free parking is extremely close if you arrive early, and you also get the same free alcohol and food here as well with standard registration.

This was a great course – nice rolling hills, pretty neighborhoods and great scenery through the vineyards.

The swag was good – ok shirt, cool coaster medal and wine glass for tasting at the end.

The down side is that, being a slower runner, a lot of the food and wine booths were packing up when i finished. That was a big bummer, but it’s probably fine since it’s not like wine is an excellent recovery drink!

Difficulty w/parking at pick-up & event day. Give 2nd pick-up date option for half-marathon runners (not just 5K). Provide swag in more organized manner by using reusable bags packed w/shirt, snacks, distance stickers/magnets, other race/vendor info. Maybe hold race on non-holiday weekend & create course that affects road traffic less (based on resident complaints). Include more breweries, & option of wine or pilsner glass when registering. Better emphasis on starting walkers at back of 5K pack (my husband ran 5K). Otherwise, great experience. Thank you!
